When times are harsh and hearts grow sore, That is when we must live even more

A Kind Remainder

By Maryam BatoolPublished 11 months ago 3 min read

I remember reading a poem that said,

"Water Water Everywhere"

Now, I'd like to change the verse too;

"Dissociation, Isolation everywhere"

Technology has become a basic need that's as significant and crucial as water for everyday routine.

I'm not going to state the details about the advantages and uses technology today has provided us with. But, just to make you realize something, here's a normal day of Tech in our life.

  • For waking up— A mobile phone
  • For traveling— A car or bike
  • Permission for a leave— Again, phone
  • Entertainment— Big Screen; Netflix on the shelf
  • Pizza Cravings— A Call to Papa Johns
  • Writing a Journal— Grab the iPad
  • Shopping— Amazon( A click away)
  • Meeting friends— A video call

And it's ultimately an infinite loop.

.

It helps us do our tasks more efficiently and comparatively nicely than in the earlier centuries...

For us, a phone is more than just a gadget—it’s a lifeline. It has become a powerful amplifier of human potential, extending our reach, enhancing our abilities, and even safeguarding our lives. Time and again, it has proven to be a lifesaver, solving problems in ways that were once unimaginable. From emergencies to everyday challenges, this small device has transformed the way we navigate life.

My Motive or rather a Kind Reminder:

I think we're way too lost in this world of Robots and AI. I mean, we can be friends with them and use them for useful purposes...

But, just close your eyes for a moment and think of it like this (Well, don't actually close your eyes, Just think with all your heart)

As much as we start relying on Tech, it's breaking our relationship with the real world.

  • Mobile phone alarms: The end of relying on Mom’s morning screams and banter-filled wake-up calls.
  • Vehicle for a small distance: Made us unfit. . . No walks or Talks
  • Permission for leave, Sending a message online to school or work: End of handwritten applications.
  • Entertainment through Netflix: Less time with family in the room next to us.
  • Food cravings: Ended our picnic parties with families (One phone call and binge eat in bed)
  • Journalling on devices or an iPad: The End of doodling and journalling on diaries and crafting handwritten letters for loved ones.
  • Online shopping: No more fun banter with siblings on the way to the mall. No more 'Mom, I want that!' cries echoing through the aisles.
  • Video Calls: End of meeting friends and family often in person, 'cause we can talk to them wherever whatever!
  • _________________________________________________

Just to be clear, I am not, was never, and won't be against technology, it just doesn't make any sense... All I want to say is :

Let's someday not order a Pizza and cook your loved ones a lovely and profound dinner and dine together.

Let's, for a while, leave our car keys and go on a walk with our family instead.

Let's, for one day, craft a handwritten letter with ink and emotions and send it to our loved ones.

Let's, for a single morning, ask Mom to wake us up and hear her dramatic wake-up calls. (We love you, MOMs)

Let's, for once, ask our sibling to help us study instead of ChatGPT.

    .

    .

    .

There are countless ways to truly connect with people—if only we put our devices aside for a while. The surge of genuine satisfaction and positive dopamine would be unreal!

More than anything, the inner peace you'd feel would make you realize just how much we've been missing out.

I know many of you are already engaging in amazing activities to strengthen your bonds with people rather than screens. But for someone like me, it's a wake-up call—a reminder to cherish human connections and recognize their true importance.

Many believe that this century is the easiest to live in—but no, it’s actually the hardest when it comes to real human connection. We are surrounded by machines, yet disconnected from each other.

And when times get tough, and hearts grow weary, that’s when we must choose to live even more. Let’s reconnect, remind ourselves that we still need humans—just as much as they need us.

Technology connects us to the world, but human connection keeps us alive.

So, when times are harsh and hearts grow sore,

That is when we must live even more—

Not through screens, but through the human door

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

    A/N:

I'm sorry if I said anything wrong, I'm no professional to talk stuff like this. It's just my way of seeing things.

“The End of doodling and journalling on diaries and crafting handwritten letters for loved ones.“ I especially miss this. Nothing can truly replace the feeling and the process behind handwritten letters, physical books, and the like. Technology may offer convenience, but it can never replicate the raw, intimate experience of pen on paper—at least, not for those who understand and cherish its true essence. This is such a great work overall, so much wisdom you have Maryam, its a joy to read your work!

There is a ton of wisdom packed into this! Let's all go off the grid and revert to living outside and singing songs out in the wild is what I say! :) Haha! :D

This is how modern life is, whether we like it or not, and it is impossible for us to refuse because it is something we live in. Bravo my dear Maryam

  • As an introvert who has social anxiety, I'm happy with the way things are now. But that doesn't mean I'm right and you're wrong. No such thing. This is just our preference of how we wanna live our lives. I feel there's no wrong or right to that. As long as our happiness does not hurt others, then it's okay hehehe

You should remove your author's note and apologize. you have said absolutely nothing wrong. As I have said to you many times, you have wisdom that exceeds your age. When I was in my twenties, there was a song. I forget who played it, but it was called "Video Killed the Radio Star." We can rewrite that now and say technology has killed human life. Phones are no longer something that you use to talk to someone; they are many people's brain cells. An excellent story Maryam. I feel a top story coming on!!

This was such a wholesome, much-needed reminder! Loved the balance between tech love and real connection. "Mom’s morning screams"—iconic. And that last line? Chef’s kiss. No need to apologize, this was straight-up gold! ✨💖 P.S. Next time, I'm ditching my phone and writing a handwritten note… unless my handwriting betrays me, in which case, back to typing.😆

Ohh! This is very thought-provoking and deep. In today's digital age, this is an essential message for everyone. I completely agree with everything you said, and there's no need to say sorry, you've done a great job 👏✨ But the sad part is that as time passes, we are diving even deeper into the world of technology and AI. The time 50 years ago was probably better, but 50 years from now, everything will change. While technology brings numerous benefits to our lives, it's also distancing us from the rich beauty of the past and the vital interpersonal connections that truly enrich our existence.
