They were meeting again on one of their late-night rendezvous.
The late summer breeze hit their skin like a light feather's caress as their legs swung back and forth, their hands firm on the swings.
He'd smile as she made jokes, ears listening to every problem she had. He'd comfort her when she broke into tears, never finding the right time to tell her. He wanted to tell her like every other time they'd meet, but it was never the right time.
He wanted to hug her and share what lurked in his mind and heart.
His mouth opened to voice the words his eyes had always spoken volumes of, but his phone buzzed, dragging his attention away.
A phone call from his mom meant she had found out he was out.
He turned to her to say not what he wished to say but, "Gotta go."
She flashed him a knowing smile as she jumped off the swings, ready to escape to her room.
"See ya," she said as they both parted ways. Her twinkling eyes wrinkled as she smiled, her black hair flowing behind her like a defiant flag, her ebony skin glistening under the moonlight, smooth like chocolate. Fireflies followed her as though nature itself acknowledged just how much of a beauty she was.
He ran over to his home, his mom's face grim as her eyes met his.
His face contorted in confusion as he had expected anger.
Her lips parted as she said, "Alice is dead."
