Top 5 Reasons To Write A Novel
and none of them are because you want to make money
Are you on the fence about whether or not you should write that novel? Spending day after day weighing the pros and cons, looking for advice on social media and blog posts about whether writing is worth it?
I'll be the first to tell you that writing a book isn't for everyone, but it is something that everyone can do.
Sure you may not get it right the first time, but if you're willing to put in the time, dedication, a little piece of your heart, and an even bigger piece of your soul then here are five reasons why you should go ahead and write a novel.
You Have a Story To Tell
Sure this one might seem like a surefire answer, but you'd be surprised to know how many people walk around in their daily lives with stories living in their heads and they decide not to write them down.
Bring those stories to the paper, bring them out for the world to see, and save them from being lost to the fragile thing that is our memories.
There's a whole reason why Post-it notes were invented... Without them, I wouldn't remember to do an embarrassing amount of things and many of my story ideas would be lost forever.
The Story You Want to Read Hasn't Been Written
I'm sure at some point or another you thought to yourself (or out loud)
"Wouldn't it be cool if in this movie _blank_ happens instead?
Here alone is the reason many writers exist.
Their favorite show or movie had a bad ending or they thought their favorite character deserved better. Or they were reading a book and it sparked a big "what if" idea.
If you've ever had one of these and that book doesn't exist it is now your duty to bring it to life.
To Teach a Lesson
If there's one thing a book can do it is imparting wisdom and knowledge to all those that read it.
You've lived a life full of love, loss, and learning and there are many out there who could benefit from what you have been through as it could help them deal with what they may be currently going through.
So why not share what you know in a way that will be 100 times more effective than standing in front of them and giving them a lecture on why you're not supposed to lick frozen poles, instead show them what happens when a character does.
To Enjoy Your Creativity
Even before I knew how to write my parents always told me I had an overactive imagination.
It led to wonderful times of playing pretend with my siblings and some not-so-wonderful times of being lectured for daydreaming in class.
The world of stories is a place where anything and everything is possible, we can fly, lift mountains, walk on the moon, and so much more than we are sadly unable to achieve in this reality.
Using your creative mind you can dream up amazing things.
You might as well put them down on paper so that those who can't can experience them as well.
To Prove That You Can
There's no better self-motivator than doing something just to prove to yourself, not anyone else, that you are capable of doing it.
Sure doing it to prove to others that you are capable of doing it is good as well, but I guess it depends on which one motivates you more.
You can choose to keep your novel a secret that only you and your word processor know or you can shout it out loud for all the world to know and see.
There truly is no feeling like completing your first novel, holding it in your hands, and saying, "Wow, I wrote this."
---
Whatever reason you have for writing a novel it is going to be an amazing and life-changing experience that I recommend everyone try at least once in their life.
You might just find out that it's a habit you're just not going to be able to stop once you start.
Have I convinced you to try?
If so… go start writing.
If not… read this article again.
With love,
B.K. xo xo
