The Silent Village

A Mysterious Forest Community Where Silence Is The Only Protection Against a Deadly Voice

By Zeeshan khanPublished 7 months ago 2 min read

*"The Silent Village"*

In the heart of a dense forest in Northern Europe, there was a small village named Elmswood. It wasn’t on any modern map, nor did it appear in any travel guides. This village had no electricity, no cars, and no internet. What made Elmswood truly strange, however, was not its isolation—but its silence.

The people of Elmswood never spoke.

Travelers who accidentally stumbled upon Elmswood described it as eerie and unnatural. No laughter of children, no chatter in the market, not even whispered greetings. The villagers communicated only through gestures, signs, and facial expressions. And they always smiled—calmly, politely, and in unison.

One autumn evening, a young journalist named Leo from the nearby town heard the legend of Elmswood at a pub. Intrigued by its mystery, he decided to investigate. Armed with a backpack, camera, and notebook, he trekked into the forest in search of the village.

After two days of hiking through misty woods and narrow trails, he found Elmswood. Just as the stories described, it was quiet—unnaturally so. Children played in the open fields, women hung laundry on lines, and men tended to livestock, but not a single word was uttered.

Leo introduced himself to an old man standing near a well. The man only smiled, nodded, and pointed toward the largest cottage. It seemed he was directing Leo to the village elder.

Inside the cottage, an elderly woman greeted Leo with a warm, silent smile. She motioned for him to sit and served him tea. After a few minutes of failed attempts at conversation, Leo showed her his notebook and wrote, “Why does no one speak here?”

The old woman’s smile faded. She took the notebook and wrote back, “We keep the silence to stay safe.”

Leo blinked in confusion. “Safe from what?”

She stared into his eyes for a long time before writing, “The Echo.”

Intrigued and unsettled, Leo pressed further. Through notes and gestures, the elder explained: Many years ago, a strange voice had begun whispering in the forest. Anyone who heard it felt an overwhelming urge to follow it—and none who did were ever seen again. It mimicked voices of loved ones, played with memories, and eventually lured people away.

To survive, the village elders had imposed a rule: *no speaking*, ever. Without sound, the Echo had nothing to copy, nothing to use.

Leo, half-believing and half-doubting, decided to stay the night. That night, while lying in the small wooden guesthouse, he heard it.

A soft voice whispered, “Leo… it’s me, your sister… come outside…”

His heart froze. His sister had died in a car crash years ago. He knew it couldn’t be real. Still, the voice sounded so convincing, so gentle, so familiar.

He covered his ears and stayed put.

By morning, the villagers looked at him with both concern and approval—they had seen many fail this test. Leo knew now the silence was not superstition. It was survival.

He left Elmswood quietly, never revealing its location. His article was titled *“The Village That Speaks in Silence.”* Most readers called it fiction. But Leo knew the truth—somewhere deep in the forest, a village lived in quiet unity, protected from the voice that could steal your soul.
