The Most Powerful Thing You Can Do As a Writer
is easier to do than you might think
It may be shocking to know that there is something even more powerful that a writer can do - other than writing.
While writing is how we leave our mark on the world, giving readers powerful emotions through our stories with our ability to make them, laugh, cry, and fear that dark spot at the bottom of the basement stairs that not even the strongest of lights could chase away… it's not the most powerful thing we can do.
Writing can seem like such a solitary endeavor as most of it happens as we sit alone in our writing spaces and bring the images, thoughts, and emotions from our heads onto the pages in front of us, but if there's one thing all writers need and that all writers can give.
It's support.
Never have I come across a writer who didn't want to interact with another writer's social media post because they thought that interacting with another writer's post gave their own less of a chance to be seen.
Readers are never a writer's first fans - it's always other writers.
Writers don't gatekeep websites that help them plan their stories or the editors they hired to help draw their work together. They share tips tricks and information like no other community and they genuinely want to help their fellow writers succeed because, in the writing community, the one to make it to the top doesn't pull away the ladder that their fellow writers helped build, they reach down a hand and help the next one along the way.
How Can You Support Your Fellow Writers?
★ Celebrate in their successes as much as you share and celebrate in your own.
★ Give constructive feedback to help highlight their strengths and suggest areas for improvement where they may be weak.
★ Promote their work just as you would want your promoted. A quick click of the share button can do wonders to support a writer whose work deserves to be seen.
★ Offer encouragement, kind words, and a friendly voice. Writers have to face feelings of rejection, lack of confidence, and many other overwhelming emotions so often that just some simple words can change their day around.
★ Share resources in either what you know or what you use. Books, websites, seminars. Empowering other writers brings collective success and growth to the whole community.
Writing can be a lonely endeavor, but it doesn't have to be. When writers support other writers we all grow as a community with forces of encouragement, collaboration, and celebration.
Writers already have to fight against movies, television shows, and social media, and for the self-published author, it can be hard to be seen under the more successful traditionally published authors that line most of the shelves at your local bookstore.
Every writer deserves the chance to see their dreams come true.
And the number one person who can help them -
Is you.
Go out and support your fellow writers today.
With love,
B.K. xo xo
