Death Throes of 2025
It must be nearly over, the neighbors have begun lighting the wicks and fuses of the missles, bombs, and candles in their arsenals. The dog is hiding under the coffee table in the loft, and I still haven’t moved my clothes into the closet in the other room. Clean sheets are on the bed, and my husband is shuffling the cards. We went out for pizza after crossing new sexual intimacy bridges, skipped the appetizer, and shared a piece of cheesecake after one slice each, sausage and onion. We brought the rest home in a box.

Anne Bernays and Pamela Painter — What If? Writing Exercise for Fiction Writers prompts The Exercise — Examine a scene you are having trouble with, one that (1) demands action, although not necessarily physical action, and (2) provides a turning point in your story. If you don’t yet have such a scene in your story, try writing one. Make it at least three pages long, although five pages will give you a greater chance to develop the personal dynamics and show how the balance of power can keep changing. Tish, discovering that Mort has cheated her in a business deal, confronts him with evidence that would stand up in court, forcing him to return funds he has stolen. Alycia, a charming jewel thief, is caught in the act by her intended victim — an attractive diamond merchant — and seduces him, ensuring both his silence and the gift of a handsomely insured necklace. The Objective — To show that by the time the scene is over the position of dominance has changed while the characters remain consistent and credible throughout.

The existence of a woman
When I see my mother and think of my sister I wonder what kind of creation my Lord is. Sometimes she is angry, sometimes she is pleased. Sometimes she is silent, sometimes she speaks. When I enter the house I have only one question: "Where is mother?" Why is that? Because she is the one who gives me food she is the one who will know whether I have eaten or not. I have tried to put this same thought into writing. My Lord created this world but first He prepared a map of it. In this map there were mountains, rivers and the sky... There was something in it but everything was silent. Then my Lord created a woman to fill it with color.
