Stepping into an AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL

My First Day as an Exchange Student!

By Dr SadiaPublished 8 months ago 3 min read

Hello everyone! Muhammad Kashif here, reporting live from Truckee, California! I'm an exchange student from Pakistan, and I'm excited to share my experiences with you on my YouTube channel. Today's a big day for me: it's my first day at an AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL! It's a dream come true, and I want to show you everything I experience here. Come along and see what my first day at an AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL is like!

A Warm Welcome to Truckee High

Walking into Truckee High, I wasn't sure what to expect. The atmosphere was definitely different from what I'm used to back home. There were students everywhere, chatting and getting ready for the day.

I was greeted at the door by a staff member. She was very kind and welcoming, which immediately put me at ease. It was a great first impression!

Navigating the Halls

My first challenge? Finding class 313. Truckee High is much bigger than my school in Pakistan, and the layout is quite different. The hallways seemed endless, and I was a little lost. I did find my way, but it was not easy. I was nervous and worried about being late.

Thankfully, I ran into a student named Wesley. He was super friendly and offered to show me the way. I said, "hey, what's your name?". He replied, "Wesley", and I told him it was nice to meet him. I asked if he could show me to class 313. Wesley was like, "oh yeah it's just you go around here". I was so relieved, I said, "appreciate it" and he said, "you're welcome". Without his help, I might still be wandering those hallways!

Meeting Mr. Rowe

In class, I met Mr. Craig Rowe. He teaches English classes, but I'm in his speech class. I told him that I was excited to be in his class and wanted to learn a lot.

He welcomed me, saying it was cool to have me in class. He did mention that 7:30 in the morning wasn't ideal, I agree! We then talked about Lake Tahoe. He asked how I was liking it. I told him it's very nice and beautiful. I even got to jump in the lake, and the water was very nice! He responded, "nice, nice".

I told him it was my first day, but that it looks good so far. I hope to make some memories here!

Mr. Rowe asked if I was here for the whole year, and I confirmed that I'm an exchange student from Pakistan. He then mentioned seeing that the school had soccer, and asked if I play. I told him that I do, and that I'm on the varsity team. He seemed impressed and said, "nice, nice, that's exciting".

He was also very open to me filming in class, which was awesome.

A Glimpse into American Education

The classroom atmosphere was relaxed and engaging. I was able to be a part of a group that was working on a project. There were other students in my group, and we all worked together to complete the tasks.

The students' openness to collaborate and share ideas made me feel like I was part of the school.

Language and Culture

While everyone was very welcoming, I will admit, understanding everything that was going on in class was a challenge. Sometimes the language barrier made it difficult to follow the discussions. I was trying to participate and learn. The cultural differences were apparent.

Reflecting on Day One

My first day at an AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL was an incredible experience. From the warm welcome to navigating the hallways and meeting new people, it was a day full of new experiences and excitement. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to be here as a Kl-YES [https://www.kl-yes.org/] student and I can't wait to see what the rest of the year holds.

I'm excited to continue sharing my journey with you all, so make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel for more updates!
