Okay, Ralf writing can’t be that simple! The word of the day was Egalitarian. Now Write.

The word of the day challenges.

A couple of years back as a writing challenge and in order to show that anything can become writing. I took the word of the day from dictionary.com and wrote something with it. 7 Words for 7 days all bits of stories that I worked on based on what the word was. This was the story that came from Egalitarian. Happy Independence Day I hope you like this reworked version.

Sam sat there on the floor unsure of what was happening. His brain was full of images thoughts and memories that didn’t quite make sense. It was as if waking from a long dream and then trying to process reality and dream to find the truth.

Sam stood up from the ground and started to survey his surroundings. Before him behind glass was a huge copy of the declaration of Independence. For a moment he stood there and read the declaration and its egalitarian message. He felt a warmth in his heart and a strength in his limbs.

Standing there lovingly looking at the declaration he hears a noise right outside the window. He walks over to see what is transpiring. Through the window he sees a group of people beating on a young black female. She was actually holding her own as she protects a young man who lay unconscious on the floor. She punches one guy really hard and kicks another sending him flying back but then two others hit her hard sending her to the floor.

Sam knew the young woman could not take any more punishment. He has to get out there fast. It would take too long to find the way out. He grabs a nearby pole with a flag on it, backs up some takes a running start and putting the flag in front of him crashes through window. The flag waves as he soars through the air and lands on top of one of the thugs. He then swings the pole around the flag still majestically waving as he hits the guy across his face sending him flying. Sam then kicks another guy hard in the chest. Again he swings the pole with the flag around forcing all the men to back up. He stands there flag waving in the wind ready to continue but no one moves. The thugs that were still standing look at him fearfully there eyes open in shock as they just stare at him. Even the young black woman was looking at him with fearful eyes.

The thugs take off running some still looking back at Sam wide eyes at their faces. The young woman stands up slowly never looking away from him saying,

“What are you?”

Sam stands there looking at her with a smile as she sees his appearance constantly changing. His face just keeps morphing, blue eyes, green eyes, grey eyes, brown, red hair, blond hair, brown hair, white, til finally a Native American looking man with long white hair and amber eyes stands before her. Her eyes stay wide and she stands in front of the unconscious young man on the floor. Her fist balled ready to fight. His smiles warms as he says,

“I am here to help.”

As he stands there flag pole in one hand, flag still waving in the light breeze as fire works light up the sky behind him and he reaches out for her with his other hand to help her get steady on her feet.

”Is your friend ok?”

He adds his voice softening as he blinks slowly.

He tried to defend me from them and they beat him for it. I had to do something to help him.

He bent down still holding the pole and says as he shakes the young man.

“Hey buddy are you ok?”

The young man opens his eyes and with a jump scuttles back away from Sam. She grabs him to reassure him saying

”He helped us.”

They both look at Sam not quite sure what to make of him as he stands there flag pole still in hand wind gently blowing the flag and his long white hair as fireworks light up the sky.

All this from the word of the day Egalitarian. Anything can be fodder for writing, creating, having fun. I’ll add the link for the original video and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

More! Pick another word. I like the creative way to structure a flash challenge around the word of the day. I enjoyed how you reworked the story for Independence Day and tied in the theme of equality especially when the character Sam reflects on the Declaration of Independence and uses the flag as a symbol of rescue.
