My Search for an Alternative Writing Processor
It led me to Reedsy Editor
I’ve been writing all of my stories on Microsoft Word. It has been the only writing processor I'ved used for my writings.
Well, lo and behold my subscription finally ran out. I’ve been debating whether or not to resubscribe. It’s $6.99/month or $69.99/year for a personal account and has a lot of useful features. However, after much thought, I decided not to renew my subscription. There are other options out there that are free with an account. So, what alternative writing processor did I decide on?
I’ve used Google Docs in the past for my writings and have had nothing short of a great experience. One thing I like about Google Docs is that it saves your work instantly so there’s no fear of losing important work and you can work offline if needed. Google Docs gives me a peace of mind knowing that all of my writings will be saved every second I type.
Google Docs is amazing but I wanted to keep looking to satisfy my growing curiosity of other writing processors that maybe weren't as mainstream.
Well, my search has led me to Reedsy Editor. It's a writing processor by the writing platform, Reedsy. And guess what? It's free!
Reedsy is a platform where authors who are looking to self publish can connect with and hire editors, book cover designers, those that specialize in marketing books of a vast range of genres, and more.
I’ve never used their services to hire an editor or anything like that and I can imagine it can get a little pricey depending on the individual editor, cover designer, etc.
However, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying using their writing tool, Reedsy Editor.
Reedsy Editor is a writing tool where one can write their story directly on the Reedsy site. To clarify, other than sharing your work with an editor, cover designer, etc, it is not a platform where you publish and share your writings like you would here on Vocal. It is primarily a writing processor.
One of my favorite things about Reedsy Editor is that it saves your work instantly and the layout is very presentable and focus friendly. The text is easy to read and at a clear and comfortable size and format as you write.
While you can write whatever you desire, the format is designed particularly for a novel manuscript. So, aspiring novelists, this writing processor might be for you!
It’s been a very refreshing and welcoming change from Microsoft Word. I actually like this writing processor better.
A few other things I like about Reedsy Editor is that it allows you to plan out your story. You can split a chapter if you decide that its too long and insert scene breaks. You can also reorder your chapters if you think one chapter would work better here. You can add side comments as well to help you plan out your story further, track writing goals, and add images too!

On the left side of the screen is where you will find your chapters. I love this layout! With Microsoft Word, I’ve had my chapters written in separate documents. While that has helped me with keeping my story organized, I actually prefer how each chapter is there on the left side of the Reedsy Editor at my convenience.
Oh! I need to mention another helpful feature! When you have completed writing your story, you can export it as an E-book or Print Ready PDF. Reedsy Editor will help you typeset your book and get it ready for print. I will be very much looking forward to that step when the time comes!

Over all, I’ve had a pleasant experience using Reedsy Editor. The comfortable and presentable layout definitely helps me to stay focused.
If you are looking for a free writing tool, check it out! 😊
