Author's collection.

I am a freelance writer, specializing in non-fiction history, particularly film, television, music, theatre and animation history, and speculative fiction, particularly science fiction, fantasy and anthropomorphic (“furry”) areas.

I hold an MA degree in History from the Joint Masters Program at the Universities of Manitoba and Winnipeg, and a Library/IT program certification from Red River College.

I am always in pursuit of new areas to publish my writing, new ventures to participate in on both global and local levels, and new ways of communicating with and growing an audience for my work. This includes working with people with mental disabilities, as I myself have Asperger’s Syndrome.

Career highlights:

2009: Published my first story.

2011: Published my novella, “The Pups”, through Library of Science Fiction and Fantasy Press.

2013: Published story “Octopi Bleakly Corners” in the anthology Masked Mosaic: Canadian Super Stories (Tyche Books)

2014: Published “America ‘Toons In: A History Of Television Animation” through McFarland and Company.

2014: Published short story collection, “The Singular Adventures of Jefferson Ball”, through Chupa Cabra Press.

2015: Published short story collection “Certain Private Conversations And Other Stories”, through Aurora Publishing/Pulp Corner.com

2016: Published story “A Hole Lotta Trouble” in “Superhero Universe: Tesseracts 19”, from Edge Science Fiction And Fantasy Publishing

2017: Published novella “Honey And Salt”, through Scarlet Leaf Publishing.

2018: Published reference work “The Encyclopedia Of American Animated Television Shows”, through Rowman and Littlefield Books.

2019: Self-published novella “Let’s Be Buddies”

2019: Self-published short story collection “Nothing About Us Without Us”

2020: Self-published novel “Orthicon”.

2023: Self-published novella "Split Decision"

2023: Self-published story "Fandom"

2023: Self-published story "Film Flam"

2024: Who knows?

For various reasons, I haven't published as much as I would like to on Vocal lately. I hope to change that this year.

The various new categories give me a wider set of options for publishing new material and distributing old ones, at least the ones that I haven't already published here.

And I need some good news, since I have been unemployed since before COVID.

I do not make an awful lot of money at this moment. I wish I knew how to do better, but it seems the algorithm is not interested too much in original superhero fiction or essays on animation, which is mostly what I write about. If I could figure out how to broaden my niche, as they say, things might be different.

I'll leave you with some words about one of my books:

ORTHICON by David Perlmutter

Imagine you live a relatively normal life, in a relatively normal place.

Then, without warning, you are abducted, and sent to live in a distant place, far off Earth.

It gets stranger still when you find out you are not human, or animal, or whatever you thought you were, but completely alien.

And your entire life, past, present and future, has been shaped by forces beyond your control, with no way for you to control them.

Save one…

Named one of the top 50 Best Indie Books of the Year by Read.Freely.com, “Orthicon” is a revealing narrative told in many voices, coming to only one conclusion. A revealing debut novel with an intriguing premise: who decides what is real, what is human, and what is otherwise.
