On October 7th, the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas executed a significant attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of a minimum of 40 individuals and injuring hundreds more. This surprise assault involved a combination of gunmen crossing into Israel and a barrage of rockets launched from Gaza. Israel has stated that the Iran-supported group has declared war, as its military has confirmed engagements with militants in various Israeli towns and military bases near Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to respond with retaliation.

"Our adversary shall face consequences of an unprecedented magnitude," he declared. "We find ourselves engaged in a conflict, and we shall emerge victorious."

According to the Israeli emergency medical service, a minimum of 40 Israeli citizens have tragically lost their lives, with hundreds sustaining injuries as a result of the Hamas assault. Regrettably, these numbers are expected to increase. A Reuters photographer witnessed numerous lifeless bodies strewn across the streets of the southern town of Sderot.

In response, the Israeli armed forces have launched airstrikes in the Gaza region. Witnesses have reported hearing powerful explosions and observing numerous casualties being transported to medical facilities.

According to health officials in Gaza, a total of 198 Palestinians have been killed in airstrikes, as the bombardments have penetrated deep into Gaza City, resulting in the emergence of black smoke clouds spiralling into the sky.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Hamas deputy chief Saleh al-Arouri stated that the group is currently detaining a significant number of Israeli captives, including senior officials.

Hamas has attributed the attack to Israel's intensified assaults on Palestinians in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and those incarcerated in Israeli prisons.

Hamas military commander, Mohammad Deif, formally declared the commencement of the operation through a broadcast on Hamas media, urging Palestinians worldwide to engage in combat.

In his address, he proclaimed, "Today signifies the initiation of the most significant battle aimed at terminating the final occupation on this planet," further disclosing the launch of 5,000 rockets. It is important to note that Hamas actively advocates for the destruction of Israel.

In the year 2021, Israel and Hamas engaged in a 10-day war.

This assault marked an unparalleled incursion into Israel by an indeterminate number of Hamas gunmen, crossing over from the Gaza Strip. It stands as the most severe blow inflicted upon Israel in its conflict with Palestinians since the occurrence of suicide bombings during the Second Intifada approximately two decades ago.

REPORT: ISRAELI CITIZENS TAKEN HOSTAGE

The militant group known as Islamic Jihad has announced its involvement in the attacks and claims to be holding a number of Israeli soldiers captive. Additionally, Hamas social media accounts have shared videos allegedly showing Israeli captives being taken into Gaza alive.

On its Telegram account, Hamas has released footage depicting its fighters removing Israeli soldiers from a tank.

The Israeli military has chosen not to comment on these reports at this time, stating that it will address the situation regarding Israeli captives at a later stage.

Reshet 13 TV News, an Israeli broadcasting network, has reported that militants are currently holding Israelis hostage in the town of Ofakim. Furthermore, it has been reported that five Palestinian militants were killed in Sderot, and several homes have been set ablaze.

Israeli media has documented clashes between groups of Palestinian fighters and security forces in various towns in southern Israel. The police chief of Israel has stated that there are currently "21 active scenes" in southern Israel.

In Gaza, residents have hurried to purchase supplies in anticipation of prolonged conflict. Some individuals have evacuated their homes and sought refuge in shelters.

Tor Wennesland, the United Nations' peace envoy for the Middle East, has condemned the attacks on Israel and issued a warning in a statement, stating, "This is a perilous situation, and I urge all parties to step back from the edge."

The violence has also garnered criticism from Washington and other Western capitals.

Adrienne Watson, the spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, expressed the firm condemnation of the United States towards the unprovoked assaults carried out by Hamas terrorists targeting innocent Israeli civilians. The United States firmly believes that terrorism can never be justified.

Speaking to Israel N12 News via telephone from Nir Oz, a kibbutz in close proximity to Gaza, an individual identified as Dorin reported that militants had infiltrated her residence and attempted to gain access to the bomb shelter where she sought refuge.

"They have once again entered our premises, I implore you to dispatch assistance," she urgently requested. "Numerous residences have been damaged... My husband is currently securing the door... They are discharging rounds of ammunition."

Israeli Defence Minister Gallant affirmed that "our troops are engaged in combat with the adversary across various locations" and has authorized the mobilization of reservists.

Video footage circulating on social media seemingly depicts clashes transpiring in urban streets, as well as armed individuals in jeeps traversing rural areas.

"We have been informed that there are terrorists present within the kibbutz, as we can hear the sound of gunfire," a young woman named Dvir, residing in Beeri Kibbutz, conveyed to Israeli Army Radio from her secure location.

BACKGROUND OF ESCALATING VIOLENCE

The recent increase in violence between Israel and Palestinian militants in the West Bank, as well as the Gaza Strip, which are territories where Palestinians have long sought to establish a state, is occurring in a larger context.

This context includes political turmoil in Israel, where deep divisions over judicial reforms have caused significant unrest. Additionally, the United States is currently working towards a deal to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

The foreign ministry of Saudi Arabia has called for an immediate end to the violence between Israel and the Palestinians, according to the state news agency.

Hezbollah, a Lebanese group backed by Iran, has described the operation as a decisive response to Israel's ongoing occupation and a message to those seeking normalization with Israel.

An adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has congratulated Palestinian fighters for their attack.

Hamas media has released videos claiming to show the bodies of Israeli soldiers brought into Gaza by fighters, as well as Palestinian gunmen inside Israeli homes and touring an Israeli town in jeeps allegedly driven into Israel by the attackers. The authenticity of this footage has not been verified by Reuters.

Hamas media has also circulated video footage that appears to show a destroyed Israeli tank.

In Gaza, the sound of rocket launches can be heard, and residents have reported armed clashes along the separation fence with Israel, particularly near the southern town of Khan Younis. There have also been reports of significant movement of armed fighters.

Palestinians in Gaza are preparing for Israel's response to the attack.

"We are afraid," said Palestinian woman Amal Abu Daqqa as she left her house in Khan Younis.

This attack occurred one day after Israel commemorated the 50th anniversary of the 1973 war, during which the country faced a surprise attack by Syria and Egypt that brought it to the brink of catastrophic defeat.
