I've Been Faced With Some Writing Frustrations

But I persist!

I've been making great progress on my science fiction WIP (work in progress). I just finished up another chapter and now I'm not sure how to start the next and almost final one.

No, that's not my problem. At least not my main problem. While I've fallen into writer's block or at least didn't know where I wanted the story to go, I've always pulled through. Even when I didn't think it would.

My problem is this:

I've been using Reedsy Studio which is basically Reedsy's alternative to Microsoft Word or Google Docs for my story writing. I've been loving it! The format simplistic and non-distracting and the layout is organized - ideal for people writing chapters.

I went to open my WIP on Reedsy Studio wondering just how I was going to start the next chapter when lo and behold I was greeted by an error message.

It worked just fine the previous day!

Apparently, I have to update my web browser to the latest version. First time this happened, I got an error message on Google Chrome. I resorted to using a different web browser (Microsoft Edge) for the time being. That worked for about a few more months.

Until now.

So, I updated to the latest version for both web browsers.

That didn't help.

Next, I contacted Reedsy support. They suggested disabling any active VPNs and deleting Reedsy cookies from the browser and logging back in. They recommended using Google Chrome but I did the steps for both web browsers just to be safe.

I didn't see any active VPNs and I deleted all cookies and history from my browser.

That didn't do anything either. I'll have to spend more time looking into it.

For the time being, I'll have to settle with a few alternatives:

Use a different writing processor

I was originally writing my story on Microsoft Word until my free trial version ran out. When that happened, I had to decide whether to buy the subscription or look for a free alternative.

That's when I discovered Reedsy. I moved my story there and instantly liked the layout. Although, like it is with moving to any new platform, writing processor, etc, it took some getting used to. Besides the format, there's another good thing about it. It's free to use.

I did consider Google Docs, a popular writing processor which is also free. I could always continue my story there and copy and paste it into my document on Reedsy the next time I use the library.

Write the old-fashioned pen and paper way.

I could always write my next chapter in my notebook. I've not handwritten a story in a notebook since before I started using a laptop.

Hey, if I go this way, some good is sure to come out of it! Writing in a notebook is far less distracting that writing on a laptop. There's little chance of being distracted by the internet or social media if it's just you and your notebook. Writing in a notebook can also help you to get more in the creative mood. At least for me.

I do use a notebook for writing but only for plotting out my story.

I could continue writing my story in a notebook at home and then access my Reedsy account at my public library. I know I'll be able to get into my story there.

Just keep using Reedsy (but with limitations)

I could continue writing my story on Reedsy but will have to do it exclusively using the library's computers for the time being. I'm thinking my laptop might just be outdated. It's going on six years old!

Thing is that's going to slow down my writing. I'd rather write my story at home and the library's obviously not always open when I want to write. I think it will be best to switch to any of the other alternatives.

Oh well! I'm going to just keep writing on. A little technical difficulty isn't going to set me back!

God Bless You, girl. More power to you! Every author has known to horror of seeing all their good work erased. It's not just aggravating, it's discouraging. Your perseverance is something you should be proud of! I'll make a suggestion too, based on my own experience. Take it for what it's worth. I had the same issues not long ago with Microsoft Word. And then running out of Gmail space. I ended up purchasing both. When on a monthly plan for both, it costs me less than a single meal at Taco Bell. Currently, when I look at Microsoft through my account, I've used up 34.5 GB out of 1 TB. That means, I have only used three percent of my available storage. 3%!!! With Microsoft 365, you get OneDrive where you can back up files, photos, and then you can access them from any device. Hell, I didn't realize it until just now! But there is an email feature with this that I can use if I want to switch over from Google. And I just might (although I love my gmail name). It would be a way to eliminate paying for extra storage for my email (although that's only $2 a month.) It is the ability to back everything up through OneDrive that is most helpful with situations like what you just went through. I actually started doing it monthly, but then around Christmas, I had the money (rare) and so I bought the 365 family for a year. And I don't even have a family! LOL If there are multiple people in your household, you can all get your own extra storage through this plan. I'm not an advertisement for Microsoft. I'm just saying in my experience, paying for its extra features sure had eliminated most of my worries about losing my work (as long as I hit SAVE CHANGES when writing a first draft for Vocal.) I appreciate knowing about Reedsy though. Knowing about a free option as a backup plan is great. ⚡💙⚡

I have been using Reedsy for more than two years now. I love it. It's great for novels, but not only.
