Forever in my heart

A heartbreaking tale of love and loss

By New stAr writer Published 6 months ago 3 min read

My name is Adnan. I'm an ordinary person, living an ordinary life. My wife's name was Rimsha. We had been married for only three years, but those three years were the most precious asset of my entire 25 years of life. Rimsha... a quiet and serious girl... but with a sea of love inside. She didn't talk much, but her eyes had a world of their own. She was the result of my prayers, something I had never even dreamed of.

At first, everything was normal. No excessive joy, no sorrow. But over time, I noticed Rimsha was often lost in thought. She would wake up at night, or remain silent throughout the day. When I asked her, she would just smile and brush it off.

One night, when I came home, Rimsha was sitting on the roof, staring at the sky. I sat beside her and gently asked, "What are you thinking?" She looked at me, smiled, and said, "Sometimes I feel like flying away... just somewhere far, far away, where no one knows me, and there are no memories."

I looked at her in surprise. "Why are you so sad, Rimsha?" She remained silent. I took her hand, "Rimsha, whatever it is, tell me. I'm your husband. If you're breaking, tell me."

Tears started flowing from her eyes. "Adnan... I have cancer." My breath stopped. The entire sky seemed to have fallen on me. I couldn't say anything. I just stared at her.

"I found out six months ago, but I didn't want to burden you. I wanted to spend whatever time I had left with you, happily..."

That night, I broke down. And for many nights that followed, I cried with her. Rimsha started chemotherapy. Her body grew weaker, her hair fell out, her face withered away. But one thing didn't change... the light in her eyes, which always told me: "Thank you, Adnan, for making my last days so beautiful."

The room was filled with the smell of medicine. Rimsha lay on the bed, her hair completely gone, but her eyes still had that same peace... that same quiet smile that shook me to my core. I had left everything for her — office, friends, world. Now my world was just Rimsha.

The doctor called me one day. "Adnan, we've done everything we can... now all you can do is make Rimsha's remaining days beautiful." Something inside me shattered. I sat outside, leaning against the hospital wall, and cried uncontrollably.

That evening, I decided to give Rimsha everything she had ever dreamed of. I took her to the open air. I took her to the park where we first met, sitting her in a wheelchair. "Do you remember, Rimsha?" She smiled, "Yes... this is where you said, 'I will never let you be sad.'"

Tears filled my eyes. "But you've been sad every day, Rimsha... and I couldn't do anything..." She took my hand, "No, Adnan, you've taught me how to live... I'm lucky to have my last breaths with you."

The next day, we went to the beach. The waves, the golden sunlight, and Rimsha's frail body sitting in the wheelchair, watching the sun... like an angel's last wish being fulfilled.

That night, as I sat beside her, giving her sleeping pills, she suddenly said: "Adnan, if I don't wake up tomorrow... don't be upset..." I was shaken. "Don't say such things, Rimsha. You'll get better. We'll live together forever."

She looked at me, smiled faintly... "I'll always be with you, Adnan... in your heart... in your prayers... and in the silence... where we both feel each other."

The next morning... when I woke up, Rimsha's breath had stopped. There was a smile on her face... like someone who had slept peacefully. I didn't scream, I didn't cry... I just kissed her forehead one last time... "Goodbye, Rimsha... you've left a pain in my heart that will live with me forever."
