How do you know when you’re drifting apart from a friend? How do you know you were the best friend you can be? How do you know whether that friend’s actions were worthy of maintaining the friendship?

Despite what cartoons might seem to say, friendship is not easy. It’s actually not made in a day. In fact, the feelings, perhaps the disdain, that has to be overcome… it can’t be pushed aside. So you have to navigate it.

Oh, why does everything have to be so complicated? So amorphous, so… multi-faceted?

Maybe that’s the wrong question. Maybe the question is why would we even want it to be different? Why would we want anything other than the clunky awkward-ness that comes from a new friendship… or relationship?

Maybe the crazy truth is we don’t. Maybe we wouldn’t want it any other way!

We want the awkward-ness, because at least that brings agreement. At least that… eventually… brings the end of doubt. At least then… that brings intimacy and trust.

It’s an open-ended concept. I’ll have to get more into it next time.
