Natalie Goldberg's Writing Down the Bones Deck prompts - Describe broccoli to someone who has never seen it before.

Broccoli looks like small, full-leafed trees

They are not holding any bees

I had broccoli last night with my fish

and mashed potatoes with butter, as a dish

Culvers has this dish, and I always wish

it was walleye all year long, rather than cod

most of the year, and walleye, I would be awed.

~~

Broccoli grew in our garden when growing up

It was the little trees that got us to eat them in a cup

Not all of us liked them, at least not all the same

Someone would always say the broccoli was to blame

for making them sick to their stomach.

Sometimes broccoli would cause havoc.

~~

Then there is broccoli salad, and broccoli

in place of pasta when you are gluten-free

rather than pasta in chicken alfredo.

I love the way it is so thoughtfully

made and how broccoli is better than gluten-doh

~~

Bacon is in the salad and sunflower seeds, and

a homemade dressing can be made and on hand

Not too much sugar and just the right amount

of dressing, it won't be bland or not count

~~

I enjoy broccoli and all other veggies

Love all vegetables and pledgies

to eat more veggies

~~

Broccoli for breakfast, lunch, and dinner

More veggies may make me thinner

~~

I am pledging to eat more veggies and especially broccoli!

Authors note: I had broccoli alfredo pizza once too. It was delicious.

Natalie Goldberg's Writing Down the Bones Deck prompts - How about how to eat with a knife and fork? Explain it to a Martian.

I want to believe that Martians communicate without talking and use direct brain-to-brain communication, so I will think it as I do it, and they will learn it! In the first photo chopsticks are being used. Then a sharp knife was used to cut the pizza.

There are butter knives and sharp knives. Forks can hold food in place and be used to pick a morsel of food to then place in your mouth. The tines tend to be sharper for easy access sometimes.

To cut food you will first place a fork in the item to hold steady, then place the knife to cut. Cut the item closely to where the item is held. One bite at a time then to finish this meal. There are certain dishes that will not work as well with a knife and fork.

A spoon is used to eat soup and to eat pudding and jello and other food that has more of a liquid consistency. I don't know where I got the idea that Martians know how to communicate without words. I'm sure I wouldn't know the words if they did use words.

It is okay to make a decision like Martians communicating without words as I'm sure it is okay to use whatever form of communication I think is best here for this example.

This was such a fun, imaginative read. I really want to try broccoli alfredo pizza now!

  • Broccoli and mashed potatoes sound divine! I too have always thought that Martians would communicate telepathically

Really love how you'd teach a Martian how to use a fork and knife. <3 BTW, broccoli is gooood on pizza.

These were really difficult challenges, but you did great! I remember in high school our English teacher had us write an essay describing the color yellow to a blind person.
