But Ralf I don’t have anything to write about.

Writing

Writing is everywhere

It always amazes me when someone tells me,

“but Ralf I don’t have anything to write about.”

There is always something to write about. I can understand that someone might be thinking but my life is boring. But I found that this is rarely the case if ever.

Life is an incredible experience and as many people that are out there as many stories can be birthed. It is said that all stories have been written yet the version of your story is waiting to rise like a phoenix reborn.

Most writers use their own lives as a bases for what they write. I know you’ve heard write what you know well this is the case. Our characters will go through things we have gone through, experienced or learned.

Heck a lot of the times it’s inspired by the people around us. Hence the saying do not anger a writer for he will kill you many times.

Here is an example

As a kid I was attacked by a chicken, now alone this is just an amusing anecdote. But this can transform into a story. Let’s see … man-eating chicken (this works both way cause it could turn into Man Easting chicken), aliens from outer space taken chicken form, an attack chicken and so on.

Heck the story of why the chicken attacked me alone could be a good piece to write.

I was a foolish young child playing in the yard. When I saw a kitten, he was cute and fuzzy so I picked him up. Nearby was a chicken with her chicks and mischief entered my mind. So I went towards the chicken with the kitten in a threatening manner. The chicken stood its ground with a fierce look in its eye. It then lunged forward making me turn and run. When I awoke the chicken was before me cleaning its beak as the kitten ran to its mom and I was bleeding from my head.

It could be the pole that I ran into while trying to run from the chicken that caused my bloody gash. But I still believe till this day it was that chicken that took its revenge on me.

Added a couple of flourishes to the story just add something to it. But as you see I simple thing turned story.

Some of you out there are like that too interesting. The funny thing is I personally don’t see it that way. Just to show you eye of the beholder but I can give you another example.

I walked down the street and then crossed the road.

The first question is what did you see while you were walking?

Just a man walking his dog. A bag blowing in the breeze. A bird singing in the tree. A butterfly gliding in the wind.

At this point I hope your already going wait that’s a lot of things happening there. I also hope you see the story growing and turning and becoming. Because from here you can go many directions and that’s not even adding the creative aspect.

So now let’s turn that into something.

I was walking down the street when I was greeted by a man walking his dog. Just then a butterfly fluttered by as if it were greeting me as well. The wind then picked up a bag which lazily floated in the air as a bird sang its melody. I then crossed the road with a smile on my face thinking life is good.

So now we’ve taken I was walking down the street a normal activity and made a story out of it. It’s what we do when we tell people our day. Of course some people explain it better than others but we can all say it just as well. Or at least we can all write it down making us writers. Now what you do with it levels it up changes it makes it into something else. Something we are all capable in doing and as with anything practice makes better.

Well I was about to stop when my test reader was all like

What about the bike incident of what happened, what it looked like from your eyes and describe it cinematically?

So here is the bike incident first as the plain explanation.

I went to the park one day and while riding down a hill I crashed and got hurt.

Now I will expand on what I said

One day my dad had decided to take me and my brother to the park. We got our bikes and walked there to have a nice day.

But you see In This park was a hill known as murder hill because of how bad it was to ride down. But I was all arrogant about my riding skills and heck I was a kid and this was a hill. So I had down this hill and down I went slow went to fast went to crazy and as I passed my father he just looked at me and waited. The speed picked up again and yet again and when I put on the breaks … break is exactly what I did. I big dust ball arose from the crash and my brother tried to run down and see if I was ok. My father stopped him and said,

Let’s see what happens.

So out of the dust I came forth limping and walking my bike back up towards my father.

That’s the short and the long of it but then she added

You could also add how emotions can be what someone writes

Now let’s take a piece of what I just wrote and throw some emotions onto it.

One day my dad had decided to take me and my brother to the park. With huge smile on our faces we got our bikes and walked there to have a nice day.

There was this one hill that I was always weary of they called it murder hill because of how bad it was to ride down. I hyped myself up saying this hill was nothing I got it. Looking down I found myself gulping but I wasn’t gonna let it stop me. I let go of the brakes and at first it was smooth but the faster it got the harder the bike was to control. As I passed my father my stomach sank I had realized to late this was a mistake. I was zooming now the wind was intense and when I put on the breaks … break is exactly what I did. The pain I felt as I hit the ground hard and tumbled a couple of feet left me on the floor in the huge dust ball My brother jumped with a start tried to run down to make sure I was ok. My father grabbed him stopping him and said,

Let’s see what happens.

They both waited my brother nervous my father his usual self. So out of the dust I came forth limping, feeling defeated and a bit out of it. I walked the walk of shame with my bike back up towards my father.

As you can see this changes the story adds more to it. What you do depends on what you want to write. As with my friend your welcome to ask questions or ask me to expand of things. Hope your happy Cadma

So I hope you take away from this that there is always something to write about.

Ralf, I couldn't agree with you more. I know that my life is always giving me things to write about - good, bad or ugly. It's like me playing my whistle, I can just play the notes as they're written or I can add emotion and story to them. 😊
