“Ride for ruin! Ride now!”

And forth charged the riders of Rohan! Spear and horse clashed into the line of cowering orcs, stretching out all across the horizon. Glorious sunlight streamed through the breaks in the clouds; breaks ushered forth by the might and honor of men.

Shields splintered and swords clashed below the white walls of Minas Tirith. It was a sword day that day when the red sun rose over the Fields of Pelennor!

“Dinner!”

“But Mom, the Nazgûl come!”

“They will still be there after dinner,”

“...bu–”

“No buts! Dinner first.”

Fine, Eomer needed a break anyway…

A/N:

The best stories are the ones you have to explain right? I spent way too much of my childhood recreating various battles from The Lord of the Rings with whatever toys I could get my hands on. I had an entire Lego mock-up of the Pelennor (not accurate nor to scale) that saw almost continuous use. I’m in the process of helping my parents downsize and have dug up quite a few good memories. Given how much I loathe fantasy set pieces, knights, battles, and heroic charges, those activites clearly had no impact on me...None whatsoever...

part I loved best: the Queen has spoken! (in your mother's firm resolve) I must admit that I had to refer to Wikipedia on "Hobbitery," but did find a golden nugget: "The Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey...notes this allows Tolkien to display Rohan both as English, based on their Old English names and words like "eored" (troop of cavalry...which I understand Eomer led?), and as "alien, to offer a glimpse of the way land shapes people." I think all of us here on Vocal and I'm sure, in your circle of family and friends, can attest to the gallantry we see in your work as a creator and as a man, and now we know who to thank! It was great being part of your world (until your mom interrupted us, too...lol.) ****TOP STORY****

Congrats on your leaderboard placement 🎉🎉 I was just watching LOTR inspired cooking videos on tiktok and then I find this hehe. Is it a sign to have a movie or book marathon?

  • Wooohooooo congratulations on your Leaderboard placement! 🎉💖🎊🎉💖🎊

Love this! Summer always makes me nostalgic for fantasy classics! Congrats on Top Story!

  • Obviously, your fantasy role playing paid off! Two of my children spent many hours of their childhood playing with Star Wars action figures & associated collage cities, planes etc… they’re now writing fantasy novels which they would love to publish one day.

As a parent, I would definitely have held dinner back until after dead army was released to their rest.

  • Boy did you grab the attention of the LOTR geeks (she said lovingly, with deep respect)

Ahhh! Never interrupt a child's imagination... Unless it's more toys. Legos in your case, lol. I can imagine the massive fortresses you must have built back then. Congrats, Matt! Nice story with an abrupt twist.
