2023 Certificate of Secondary Education exams result presents a 35.4% drop in pass rate

The pass rate in 2023 has dropped by 35.4% compared to 2022 when 95.3% of the candidates passed.

South Sudan’s Ministry of General Education and Instruction (MoGEI) said in a press statement on Thursday, 8th July 2024 that out of the 44,131 candidates who fully sat for the Certificate of Secondary Education examinations between 4th and 16th December 2023, only 26,440 passed representing a 59.9% pass rate.

“…out of the 44,131 candidates, 26,440 (16,633 males, 9,807 females) managed to obtain the minimum university entry qualification (Mean Grade of C and above) and hence do qualify for progression to universities while 17,691 (11,264 males, 6.427 females) could not make it, unfortunately,” Awut Deng Acuil, Minister of General Education and Instruction said.

The pass rate in 2023 has dropped by 35.4% compared to 2022 when 95.3% of the candidates passed.

The majority of the students who passed; 3,993 males and 2,351 females totalling 6,334 obtained a mean grade of plain C with only 17 candidates including eleven (11) males and six (06) females obtaining a Mean Grade of A plain.

Simon Nyok Deng, Secretary General of the National Examinations Council has claimed that the results indicate that the government invested a lot of resources in examination control mechanisms as shown by the lowest performance pass rate of 59.9% since 2014.

“The Ministry of General Education and Instruction should exert more efforts in the teaching of worst performed compulsory subjects of Citizenship, Christian Religious Education and Citizenship,” recommended Simon Nyok.

The South Sudan Certificate of Secondary Examination (SSCSE) 2023 were administered to 45,433 candidates, 28,878 of which were males while 16,555 were females from 04th December to 16th December 2023 in 498 academic schools.

One hundred and seven (107) including forty-nine (49) male and fifty-eight (58) female candidates registered for the commercial section in Juba Commercial Secondary School while one hundred twenty-six (126) of which one hundred eleven (111) were male and fifteen (15) female candidates registered for the technical section at Juba Technical Secondary School.
