Volkswagen has unveiled its updated Polo light hatchback, which is scheduled to hit Australian showrooms in early April 2022 to compete with the Mazda 2, Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Swift.

Sport with a new front end that brings it closer to the eight-generation Golf, 2022 Polo now sports a lighting strip on the front grille that connects daytime running lights integrated into the headlights.

The Mazda 2 is one of the most popular small cars on the market. But the Japanese are also showing their advantages as used cars.

Anyone who wants to buy a new small car these days will have to spend a lot of money. The current Mazda 2, for example, has already cost more than 14,000 euros on top. But because of its six-year construction period, there are also thousands of copies on the second-hand market. Some are already available for half the price. But there is little there for bargain hunters, as the little Japanese has long-term talent, as his good performance in the TUV report indicates.

Even after years of development, you can still see five doors 4.06 meters long. Large radiator grille and clear headlights are eye-catching. The character line on the side provides some basic power for it.

But, given its pleasingly compact size, Mazda2 is no space giant. The 280-litre trunk can be expanded in a classic way. Up to 950 litres of storage can be provided if the backseat is folded down. However, due to the resulting high edge, it is not always optimal to use it.

They also provide diesel fuel

The back row is a little tight for adult passengers. From the quality of the convincing cockpit is neat. The central tachometer in the combination meter with a digital speed display is strange. It may be worth searching for used cars with head-up displays because driving-related information is projected directly into the driver's field of view.

The Mazda 2 is one of the few modern small cars that also comes with diesel. However, in 2018 the 105 PS two-litre diesel engine was phased out, which is why there are only a few diesel-powered cars on offer. In contrast, there are a number of 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engines that offer three output classes. The power of the aspirated gasoline engine is 75 HP, 90 HP and 115 HP. Even with the mid-size version, you're fast enough on the road.

The drive has a uniform, linear power output and an actual consumption of about 5 litres is very satisfactory. A separate 90 HP model is also available with a six-speed automatic transmission in place of the required six-speed manual transmission. More comfy versions can be found on the second-hand market.

Four stars in Euroncap

The Mazda 2 is nimble and agile. Even a little bit of driving fun is required through precise steering and neutral driving behavior. The shock absorbers respond only to fast, violent jolts, but the substructure is still good enough to provide comfort for everyday use. Cons: Mazda Jr. 's axle springs are the Achilles heel of TUV's balance sheet because inspectors complain more often than average.

In the Euroncap test, four out of five stars made Mazda2 perform well in 2015. If you need more security, you can still invest in equipment. The comfortable version of the "Kizoku Intense" not only offers heated, topical leather seats, but also offers a variety of driving AIDS such as sleepiness, high beam, lane keeping and lane change assistance, and emergency braking. The optional infotainment system is controlled by a push-switch, so it can be operated comfortably and intuitively, similar to BMW's "iDrive" model.

In detail, the Mazda 2 has little to worry about. TUV usually criticizes only the axle springs already mentioned. If the inspector rejects the MAZDA2 label, there may be a variety of reasons, but these reasons do not indicate a systemic defect. In general, the little Japanese's HU balance is positive, because his frequency of failure in the exam is lower than the average level of his classmates. However, it also showed relatively low mileage in the main inspection.

Good choice

If you want to drive something other than the VW Polo, Renault Clio or Peugeot 208, then the Mazda 2 is undoubtedly the best choice. Despite the weaknesses of the little Japanese, in general, this pleasant small car is definitely a recommended purchase.

Anyone who can afford it can buy a young used car with low mileage and a disability guarantee. In related online deals, a copy with a reasonable range and a small petrol engine starts at 7,500 euros. If you want the 90 PS version of Mazda2 to be available particularly frequently, you should estimate 9,000 euros. Typically, rare top-level engines require a five-digit sum. (SP - X)
