Your Perfect Journey Through the Alps
From Monaco's Glamour to Slovenia's Hidden Gems

The Alps stretch across eight countries: France, Monaco, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and Liechtenstein. This iconic mountain range isn’t just a paradise for climbers and skiers, but it also boasts a treasure trove of natural wonders, picturesque villages, and hidden gems. In this blog, I’ll guide you through some of the most impressive locations the Alps have to offer, complete with practical information on accessibility and costs.

1. Monaco-Ville, Monaco
Though Monaco may not be immediately associated with the Alps, it’s the perfect place to begin your adventure. Situated on the French Riviera, the principality offers a refreshing stop with a mix of glamour and nature. The shimmering yachts in the harbor, the iconic Casino de Monte-Carlo, and the exotic garden complex make Monaco a unique destination. The contrast between the luxury of Monaco and the rugged mountains you’ll encounter later on only adds to the excitement of the journey. Flying into Nice, France, and taking the train to Monaco is the easiest way to arrive, though driving is also an option. Keep in mind that parking in Monaco can be quite expensive.

2. Gorges du Verdon, France
Often compared to the Grand Canyon, but with a green-blue twist, the Gorges du Verdon is the largest canyon in Europe. The stunning cliffs rise steeply from the crystal-clear waters of the Verdon River, creating a dramatic and breathtaking landscape. The famous Route des Crêtes winds along the canyon, offering panoramic views that will quite literally take your breath away. The vibrant color of the water changes from green to deep blue depending on the light, adding to the natural beauty. Visiting the gorge is free, and the easiest way to get there is by car, though buses run from Nice and Marseille to Castellane, which is near the canyon.

3. Glacier Blanc, Écrins, France
The Glacier Blanc is one of the most accessible glaciers in the Alps, offering a strikingly dramatic landscape. Located in the Écrins massif, one of the most rugged and pristine natural areas in the French Alps, the glacier is a perfect example of the effects of climate change. As the glacier retreats, you can witness its shrinking firsthand. The area surrounding the glacier is dotted with towering peaks, making the hike to it feel like a journey back in time. If you’re not driving, take the train to L’Argentière-la-Bessée, then a bus or taxi to the trailhead.

4. Aiguille du Midi, France
Aiguille du Midi is the epitome of a mountain adventure. The cable car takes you to 3,842 meters, offering a breathtaking view of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe. This spot is unique because you’re literally above the clouds, with an incredible vista of the vast Mont Blanc massif. The "Step into the Void," a glass floor that gives you the sensation of floating above the abyss, is not for the faint of heart, but it's an experience you won’t forget. You can take the car, train, or bus to the town of Chamonix and then ride the cable car up. A round trip will cost about €80—yes, it’s expensive, but totally worth it!

5. Lucerne, Switzerland
Lucerne is where Swiss charm meets dramatic Alpine landscapes. The Kapellbrücke, a medieval wooden bridge, is famous for its picturesque ambiance. The city lies on the shores of Lake Lucerne, surrounded by mountains like Pilatus and Rigi. What makes this place so special is the combination of natural beauty and rich history. From the charming old town to the steep hiking trails in the surrounding mountains, Lucerne has something for everyone.

6. Lindau, Germany
Lindau is a picturesque island town on the edge of Lake Constance, offering a perfect transition from the Swiss Alps to Germany. The historic town center, with its colorful facades, and the famous lighthouse make Lindau a charming stop. What makes this place unique is the peaceful lakeside atmosphere combined with views of the surrounding Alps, making it an excellent stop before you venture further into the mountains.

7. Vaduz, Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein is a miniature country that is often overlooked, yet it offers breathtaking Alpine landscapes. Vaduz, the capital, may be small, but it has a charming atmosphere with its picturesque streets and the imposing Vaduz Castle perched on a hill above the city. What makes Liechtenstein special is its calm ambiance and the fact that it’s so small you can explore everything in a single day without being overwhelmed by crowds.

8. Flüelapass, Switzerland
Back in Switzerland, the Flüelapass is one of the most beautiful mountain passes in the country, offering spectacular views of the Swiss Alps. The area is relatively quiet, providing visitors the chance to hike, bike, and immerse themselves in nature. It’s also known for its diverse flora and fauna. This area is perfect for experiencing the unspoiled beauty of the Swiss Alps without the crowds of more touristy spots. Be sure to bring snow chains in winter, as you might need them.

9. Trento, Italy
Trento, located in the heart of the Dolomites, is a charming blend of Italian and Austrian influences. The historic Castello del Buonconsiglio and Piazza del Duomo are must-sees. The city not only offers rich culture but also serves as an ideal base for hiking and biking in the surrounding mountains. Trento is renowned for its fine wines, especially the crisp white varieties from the region. The calm pace and authentic atmosphere make Trento the perfect destination for those who want to experience the Alps at a more relaxed pace.

10. Villach, Austria
Villach is a city in Austria often overlooked, but that’s exactly what makes its charm so authentic. Located along the Drau River and surrounded by mountains like the Julian Alps, Villach is the perfect base for both summer and winter adventures. What makes this place special is the combination of nature and relaxation; the thermal baths are the perfect way to unwind after a day in the mountains.

11. Vršič Pass, Slovenia
Vršič Pass in Slovenia is the highest pass in the Julian Alps, offering breathtaking views. The winding road to the top is a challenge for any driver, but the views from the top are absolutely worth it. This area is a true paradise for hikers, with countless routes through Triglav National Park. If you're not driving, you can take a bus to Bovec, but it’s not the easiest destination to reach by public transport.

12. Great Soča Gorge, Slovenia
The Soča River, famous for its unreal turquoise color, flows through the stunning Great Soča Gorge. This natural canyon is one of the most beautiful spots in Slovenia, offering countless opportunities for adventure, such as rafting, canyoning, or simply taking a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water. It’s a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers, offering a view unlike anywhere else in the Alps.
