Yangon, the largest city in all of Myanmar, is a warm and charming metropolis that will draw you in instantly. From cultural wonders and fantastic temples to modern-day conveniences, Yangon is a shimmering gem that must be unearthed. Provided below is a guide on how to go about achieving this and making memories that would last a lifetime.

Shwedagon Pagoda

A hub of worship, sculpture, art and architecture, the gloriously appointed Shwedagon Pagoda will easily be the primary reason for your holiday to Yangon. Set on 114 acres of land atop Singuttara Hill, Shwedagon Pagoda was built over 2,500 years ago and stands testament to how devoted the locals are to their faith. Rising to an astonishing 110 metres in the air, this Buddhist temple can be captured from almost every corner of Yangon. Beautified in countless gold plates, the temple’s highest point is what would initially grab your attention. This is because the top of the stupa is covered in 4,531 diamonds, of which the largest of its kind is estimated to be a 72-carat diamond. Once you enter, scenes of devotees and monks busily washing the temple’s many statues will greet you, and before you leave, you may opt to make an offering of flowers and utter a silent prayer for the journey ahead.

Mahabandoola Garden

Characterised by well-manicured paths, fountains and, of course, the 165-foot-tall Independence Monument, Mahabandoola Garden affords a great opportunity to catch your breath and enjoy a quiet meander with only awe-inspiring panoramas for company. Aside from views of the High Court, City Hall and the former Rowe and Co. Department Store, which is currently a bank, patrons visiting with their families will also have access to a children’s playground that is sure to keep the little ones busy, as you begin exploring every inch of this public park. The Independence Monument, which is a white obelisk that is surrounded by two circles of ‘chinthe’ (half-dragon/half-lion deities), ranks as the Garden’s main facet. Upon Myanmar gaining independence on the 4th of January, 1948, the Garden was renamed in honour of the Burmese hero, General Thado Mahabandoola, who laid down his life during the 1st Anglo-Burmese War in 1824.

Inya Lake

Constructed by the British in 1883 to function as a reservoir, Inya Lake is the largest man-made body of water that you will find in Yangon. Considered a popular meeting place for not just Yangonites but also tourists, including those based at Pan Pacific Yangon, which is a decent hotel in Yangon City Center, Inya Lake offers ample space to take in its stunning views. Furthermore, if you happen to be an ardent fan of sailing, then consider calling the Yangon Sailing Club on a Friday, which accommodates the whims of non-members. After your time on Inya Lake comes to a close, retire to the comfort of Yangon Sailing Club for drinks and good conversation.

Junction City Shopping Centre

Merging entertainment with some of the finest retail therapy that you can have access to while in Yangon, the acclaimed Junction City Shopping Centre will see to it that your every need is attended to. Luxury and prestige go hand in hand here, as visitors will be able to get their hands on renowned brands, such as Hugo Boss, DAKS and Versace. Boasting Myanmar’s largest cineplex and a host of other value additions that will easily have you lingering on for one entire day, Junction City Shopping Centre is one address you should not be missing out on. If searching for directions, know that this leisure attraction is located at the corner of Shwedagon Pagoda Road and Bogyoke Aung San Road within Yangon’s Pabedan Township.
