Have you ever imagined floating silently above the earth, with the cool wind in your hair and the mighty Himalayas unfolding beneath you like a painting? I lived that dream recently on a hot air balloon ride in Manali — and trust me, it was nothing short of magical.

If you’re planning a trip to Manali and want to do something truly unforgettable, let me share my personal experience, along with practical tips, must-knows, and some hidden gems to explore after your flight.

A Different Side of Manali You Didn’t Know Existed

When most people think of Manali, they picture bustling Mall Road, snowy slopes in Solang Valley, or scenic treks through pine forests. But not many know that Manali is now offering hot air ballooning — a calm, dreamy alternative to the typical adrenaline-filled adventures.

What sets it apart is the serenity. No roaring engines, no wild twists — just you, the sky, and a 360-degree view of snow-capped mountains, winding rivers, and sleepy little villages tucked into the valley below. The moment we lifted off the ground, all the chaos of life felt a thousand miles away.

When to Plan Your Hot Air Balloon Ride in Manali

Hot air ballooning in the mountains depends heavily on weather conditions. The ideal time to visit Manali for this experience is from March to June and September to November. During these months, the skies are generally clear, and the wind patterns are more predictable.

I went in mid-May — the skies were a deep blue, and the morning sun bathed the valley in a warm glow. It felt like the mountains were waking up just for us.

Avoid the monsoon season (July-August), when flights are often canceled due to safety concerns, and the winter months (December-February), which can bring harsh weather and visibility issues.

Getting to Manali and Finding the Balloon Base

Reaching Manali is fairly easy and part of the charm. You can fly into Kullu-Manali Airport (Bhuntar), just 50 km away, or take a scenic road trip from Delhi, Chandigarh, or Shimla. I chose the road route, and the drive through winding mountain roads and lush valleys was an adventure in itself.

Once you’re in town, the hot air balloon launch site is usually set up around Kullu Valley, Dobhi, or along the Beas River. These open, flat areas provide the perfect launching pad. Most operators offer transportation to and from your hotel — making it super convenient even for first-time visitors.

What the Experience Feels Like (And Why I’d Do It Again)

My ride started early — really early. Around 5:30 AM, I was picked up from my hotel and driven to the launch site, where the balloon crew was already inflating the massive envelope. The sight of the fire jets lighting up the giant balloon against the dawn sky was something else.

Climbing into the basket, I felt both excitement and nervousness. But the takeoff was so gentle, I almost didn’t notice when we left the ground. As we floated higher, I could see the entire Kullu Valley below, with the Beas River weaving through it like a silver thread.

There were no loud noises, no jolts — just peaceful silence and jaw-dropping views. I spotted green apple orchards, ancient temples, and even paragliders launching off the slopes in the distance. The ride lasted nearly an hour, but it felt like time had stopped.

Landing was smooth, and the ground crew was waiting with smiles and a light refreshment. The whole experience felt well-coordinated, professional, and safe — something I truly appreciated as a solo traveler.

Handy Tips for a Safe and Fun Balloon Adventure

If you’re thinking of booking your ride, here are a few tips from my experience:

Go for the morning slot: Weather is more stable, and the golden hour views are unbeatable.

Wear warm, comfy clothes: It gets chilly at higher altitudes, especially during sunrise.

Pack light but smart: A camera, sunglasses, and a small bottle of water are all you need.

Listen to your pilot: They’re experts and will guide you through every step.

Plan buffer time: Weather changes fast in the mountains, so keep your itinerary flexible in case of rescheduling.

Most rides cost between ₹7,000 to ₹12,000 depending on duration and operator. While it’s on the premium side, the views and the experience are absolutely worth it.

What to Do After Your Balloon Ride

Once you’re back on the ground, don’t rush off just yet. Manali has plenty more to explore! After my flight, I headed straight to Old Manali for a hearty Himachali breakfast and coffee at a riverside café. The vibe there is peaceful and perfect for soaking in the post-flight bliss.

Later, I wandered through Manu Temple, strolled to the Hadimba Devi Temple, and even visited the Vashisht Hot Springs to relax my legs after the early wake-up. If you’re staying for a couple of days, add Solang Valley, Rohtang Pass, or the nearby Naggar Castle to your itinerary.

Final Thoughts: Why You Should Add This to Your Manali Bucket List

Hot air ballooning in Manali isn’t just a sightseeing activity — it’s a soulful experience that offers a whole new perspective on the Himalayas. Floating above valleys, watching the sun rise over peaks, and breathing in the crisp mountain air is a feeling that stays with you long after the ride ends.

Whether you're an adventure seeker or a romantic at heart, this is something you shouldn’t miss. It’s calm, it’s thrilling, and it’s absolutely unforgettable.

So if you’re heading to Manali soon, make room for this magical journey in the clouds. Trust me — you’ll thank yourself for it later.
