It all started with a late-night chai session and an impulsive idea: “Let’s go somewhere this weekend.” That’s how four of us packed our bags and left Delhi in search of fresh air, pine forests, and mountains. Our destination? Triund Trek, a short yet stunning trail in Himachal Pradesh that’s perfect for beginners and weekend wanderers.

Why Triund is the Perfect Getaway from Delhi

Living in Delhi means life moves fast—and sometimes, it feels like there’s no pause button. The Triund Trek offers exactly that. Just an overnight bus ride away, it gives you a taste of the Dhauladhar mountain range, panoramic valley views, and star-studded skies—all within a weekend.

At around 9,350 feet, Triund is a ridge that gives you a dramatic close-up of snow-capped peaks while being relatively easy to reach. It's the perfect mix of effort and reward.

How We Got There: Delhi to Mcleodganj

We boarded a Volvo bus from Delhi to Mcleodganj, which took about 11 hours overnight. The morning chill in the air as we stepped off the bus in the hills was an instant mood-lifter. After a quick breakfast in the vibrant streets of Mcleodganj, we freshened up, rented a couple of trekking poles and began our journey to Triund.

Most people start the trek from Dharamkot, which is a short auto ride from Mcleodganj. The vibe there is laid-back and full of cafes run by friendly locals and travelers who never left.

The Trekking Experience – My Trail Tale

The Triund trail is about 7 km one way, and it can take anywhere from 3 to 5 hours depending on your pace. Here's how it felt for me:

Into the Pines

The trail starts with a gentle incline through thick pine and deodar forests. The air smells of earth and wood, and the sound of birds replaces Delhi’s constant honking. Every turn brings a new view—valleys dropping far below, little chai stalls offering lemon tea and biscuits, and fellow trekkers from all over the world.

The Final Stretch – “22 Curves”

After the halfway point, the trail becomes a bit steeper, especially near the infamous “22 curves” section. Don’t let the number scare you—it’s totally manageable with a few breaks and lots of water. Trust me, the views at the top are more than worth it.

Reaching Triund Top

When we reached the Triund ridge, it was like walking into a dream. The Dhauladhar peaks were right in front of us, bold and majestic. We pitched our tents, took out our cameras, and just sat in silence for a few minutes. That kind of beauty doesn’t need words.

Camping Under the Stars

One of the best parts of the Triund trek is the overnight camping experience. As the sun set behind the mountains, the sky turned shades of orange and pink, then slowly faded into a blanket of stars. We sat around a small bonfire, shared stories, and watched the Milky Way stretch across the sky.

There are tents available on rent at the top (pre-booking is recommended during weekends). Or you can carry your own camping gear.

When is the Best Time to Do the Triund Trek?

March to June and September to December are the best months.

Avoid monsoon season (July–August) due to slippery trails and landslides.

Winter treks are possible till January, but snowfall can block the path after that.

We went in April, and it was just the right blend of crisp air and clear views.

Travel Light: One backpack with essentials is enough.

Wear Good Shoes: The trail is rocky and uneven in parts.

Carry a Power Bank: Limited electricity at the top.

Bring a Jacket: Even in summer, nights get cold at 9,000+ ft.

Book Return Buses in Advance: Especially on weekends.
