Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek: Where the Mountains Whisper and Meadows Sing

Sometimes, it’s not the summit that steals your breath—it’s the journey through wide open meadows, soft grass under your feet.

Sometimes, it’s not the summit that steals your breath—it’s the journey through wide open meadows, soft grass under your feet, and a sky so vast it feels like a painting. That’s exactly what the Ali Bedni Bugyal trek gave me.

I had trekked through snowfields and rocky trails before, but this was something else—gentle yet grand, serene yet awe-inspiring. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to walk through the most beautiful meadows in India, read on.

The First Glimpse: Reaching Lohajung and Meeting the Mountains

Our journey began in Lohajung, a sleepy little town in Uttarakhand that acts as the base camp for several treks. I reached there after a long, winding drive from Kathgodam, with green valleys peeking through the window and local folk music playing softly on the taxi driver’s stereo.

The air in Lohajung was crisp and cool—even in the middle of summer. It felt like I had already entered another world. That evening, we met our guide and co-trekkers. We were a small group, all seeking a break from routine and a deep dive into the lap of the Himalayas.

Little did we know that the next few days would take us through some of the most mesmerizing alpine landscapes in the country.

Into the Woods: The Trek Begins from Lohajung to Didna

The trail kicked off the next morning with a descent into a valley, crossing streams and small hamlets along the way. Locals greeted us with smiles, cows mooed in the distance, and little kids chased each other along the hillsides.

We climbed gradually to reach Didna Village, a quaint settlement with traditional wooden houses and terraced fields carved into the mountain. It felt untouched by time. We stayed in a homestay, where the warmth of the hosts made us feel instantly at home. I still remember the taste of the piping hot dal-chawal they served us for dinner.

That night, as I stared at the blanket of stars outside, I whispered to myself—This is exactly what I needed.

Walking in a Dream: Didna to Ali Bugyal

The next day was the one I had been waiting for.

We climbed steadily through dense oak and rhododendron forests. Birds chirped overhead, and sunbeams filtered through the leaves, creating golden pathways. The forest eventually opened up, and suddenly, we were on Ali Bugyal—one of the largest and most beautiful high-altitude meadows in Asia.

I was stunned.

Rolling green hills stretched endlessly, surrounded by snow-capped peaks like Trishul and Nanda Ghunti. The grass was velvety soft, and horses grazed peacefully in the distance. The silence was profound, broken only by the wind and our hushed gasps of wonder.

We took off our backpacks and just lay down. There was no rush. The moment deserved to be soaked in.

The Heart of the Trek: Ali to Bedni Bugyal

From Ali, the trail gently curved toward Bedni Bugyal, another jaw-dropping expanse of green. The walk was easy, almost like a meditative stroll, with postcard views in every direction. Between Ali and Bedni lies the Bedni Kund, a small serene pond that holds spiritual significance for the locals.

We camped at Bedni Bugyal, right under the stars. That night, wrapped in my sleeping bag, I kept peeking outside the tent just to make sure it wasn’t all a dream. The moonlight bathed the meadow in a soft glow, and I could hear the wind whisper across the grass. It felt like the mountains were singing me to sleep.

Return with a Full Heart: Back to Lohajung via Ghairoli Patal

On our return journey, we took a slightly different route through Ghairoli Patal, a shaded forest trail filled with ancient trees and blooming flowers. It felt like nature had saved the best for last.

By the time we reached back to Lohajung, I was exhausted—but in the best way possible. My legs were tired, but my heart felt light. I had walked through clouds, shared stories around campfires, and discovered that true peace doesn't need a summit—it just needs open sky and silent moments.

Final Thoughts: Meadows That Heal the Soul

The Ali Bedni Bugyal trek didn’t challenge me with altitude or extreme terrain. Instead, it asked me to slow down. To notice the little things—the flutter of prayer flags, the rustle of wind through grass, the play of clouds over mountains.

It’s a trail that doesn’t shout for attention—but if you listen closely, it’ll speak to your soul.

I went in expecting beauty. I came back with peace.
