Things I Love About Arlington, Texas

Appreciating and showing love to my hometown

By Mark Wesley Pritchard Published 6 months ago 3 min read

Greetings, Vocal readers and subscribers! They say that everything is bigger than Texas. I happen to agree with that assessment. If you were born or raised in the Lone Star State, the following story might pique your interest. Texas is a place that I'm proud to be from and was grateful to be raised in. However, I'll be sharing a few things about what makes my hometown of Arlington so amazing. Be sure to like this story as soon as you're done reading it. Leave a comment and share which Texas town you are from, born, or raised in. What are some things you love about it? Subscribe to my page on here and follow me on social media. Now, on to the list!

The City of Arlington Itself

I was born in New York, but soon after my birth, me and my family moved to Arlington, Texas. It's part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. According to the 2020 US Census, the city had a population of nearly 400,000 people, making it the second largest city in Tarrant County after Fort Worth. In the 1990 US Census, it had over 260,000 people. It was a town that I immediately fell in love with. I loved growing up in a large city, because everything about it was fantastic. There were lots of places to see and do. I currently reside in Arkansas but have plans of moving back home in the future. No matter where I am, I'll always be a Texan. Once a Texan, always a Texan.

Texas Rangers

When I say Texas Rangers, I'm referring to the Major League Baseball team. The team was previously known as the Washington Senators from 1961-1971. The team moved to Arlington in 1972 and was renamed the Texas Rangers. In its nearly 55-year history, the Rangers have one World Series title, which they won in 2023. It was their first championship in franchise history. I attended my first Rangers game back in 2001, soon after the tragic events of 9/11. At the time, I was 13 years old. The Rangers played the New York Yankees, which at the time, was called The Ballpark in Arlington. The ballpark was amazing, and I had a great time. The Rangers won that night and that's when I became a Rangers fan. Nearly 25 years later, I have yet to attend a Rangers game as an adult at Globe Life Field, which opened in 2020. The old ballpark I mentioned is now a casino. I've asked fellow Rangers fans what the atmosphere at GLF was like and most have told me that it was wonderful.

Grandy's

If you grew up in the 90s in Texas, chances are you went to or had some great food from a place called Grandy's. It was founded in 1972 in Nashville, Tennessee and as of 2020, there are 23 Grandy's locations in six states. Grandy's was a bit like Cracker Barrel, but the one item I always craved as a kid was their chicken fried steak. The Grandy's where I lived has since closed, but if I were to return home for a weekend, this is one of the places I would stop at. They do have locations in Dallas, Plano, Irving, Sherman, and Texarkana.

The Parks Mall

It's been nearly 25 years since I stepped foot inside The Parks Mall, which was located on South Cooper Street, also known as FM 157 and still is today. I remember an AMC Theaters being inside the mall and the movie I saw was Spider-Man back in 2002. They also had a plethora of restaurants. It's a great mall and everyone should go there if they haven't already. It's been open since 1988.

Six Flags Over Texas

This theme park was one of my favorite places as a kid. My overall favorite ride was The Texas Giant. I'm not a fan of roller coasters anymore, but being on that ride was memorable. Six Flags had numerous events, but my favorite was Holiday in The Park. I loved seeing all of the Christmas lights and it felt like I was in a Winter Wonderland. It's held near the end of November and the entire month of December. I would recommend everyone to attend this event.
