If you're going on vacation or a business trip, the most important thing to put together your ultimate vacation packing list is what you need for the trip. Here are six tips to help you put together an ultimate travel packing list that will help you be able to pack correctly for your trip.

These tips aren't specific to one type of trip.

You can use them for any vacation, even if you're going on a road trip or plane trip.

1. Make sure you have everything you need for the trip. This will include your clothing and personal items, such as shampoo, soap, and personal items. You'll also need your prescriptions, if you're taking a medication, and any other important matter that you need to take on the trip.

2. If you're traveling to a warm place, especially in the tropical areas, you'll need bathing suits, a hammock, and a beach towel. If you're traveling somewhere in the United States, you'll need a bathing suit, a hat, and shorts. Also don't forget boots if you're going to be walking a lot.

3. The same applies for cold places. If you're going to a cold climate, you'll need a jacket and enough clothing to get you through the cold season. You also need a nice pair of shoes or boots to wear in the winter.

4. Use all available space. Not only you'll want to have enough space to bring everything you need, but you'll also want to use all the space your luggage offers.

If you have two pieces of luggage, one in your suitcase and one in your carry on, then you'll have 80% of the space you need.

5. Don't cram your luggage down into too small a space.

Too small spaces will make it very difficult to pack your luggage properly and you'll be unable to comfortably transport your luggage in the vehicle of your choice. The vehicle's cargo area is designed to be able to fit your luggage so that it's not in the way when you stroll along the street.

6. Make sure you have a lot of smaller suitcases.

For example, instead of taking two double stroller suitcases that take up incredible amounts of space (and are very difficult to maneuver and handle as a result), you can take one smaller upright suitcase and use it to carry your toiletries and other necessities while you stroll the tourist spots or local shops.

7. When it comes to your toiletries, consider mixing a few of your favorite toiletries with your cell phone charger, Eyecare or other powered hair dryer. Leave the heavier cell phone charger at home, unless you need its power (an outlet is not always nearby).

8. Wear a swimsuit (and shell out the money for a hotel appropriate for swimming). Hotels are able to provide swim-up services, saunas, hot and cold spas, and hot pools. It's nice to have a luxurious soak, not to mention a refreshing swim.

9. Carry your toothbrush and dental floss separately. Lugging this piece of metal around while you sleep could cause strap-on tears, so keeping it in its bag first will save you from a lot of hassle.

10. Pack light. Airlines are charging for the extra weight (up to 1lb.) of checked luggage, so lighter luggage or smaller bags will save you money and head ache when you arrive.

11. Always know the luggage rules.umpool.com has a very useful discussion about the importance of clothing and other items in your carry-on bag. Keep up-to-date on the restrictions as you pack.

12. Carefully consider the security selection. How safe are you traveling? If your luggage is lost or delayed, you'll want to make sure you have a way of knowing if your luggage has been lost or delayed. Get a jewelry tag that will be easy to identify in the event of a delay.

13. Coverage. Insurance can be expensive, but it's important that you know exactly what to do in the case of a claim. Read the small print on insurance forms to avoid surprises.

14. List your reasons for travel. What are your motivations for travel? Is it to explore the region, see new sites, investigate the culture, or do some kind of activity that influences your state of mind?

Travel Minds is a great concept as discussed in Theledge.com.

15. Map it out. If you're not a fan of using maps, spend some time creating your own map to help you better enjoy your vacation.

16. Create a vision for your trip. What is it that you want to achieve during your vacation? Do you want to relax on a beach, soak up the sun on a mountain retreat, or explore the cultural gems of a particular city?
