Castle of Belver

A tiny rocky island in the center of the Tagus River is home to Almourol Castle. This is a charming 12th-century sandstone structure. The massive walls and circular towers are a mix of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. The castle has become a well-liked tourist destination and can be reached by a short boat ride from the mainland. Amourol Castle is part of Portugal’s rich historical environment and is designated a National Monument.

Belem Tower dates from the 16th century and is adorned with the symbols of the House of King Manuel I. This includes the thick rope that circles around the castle and ends in elegant knots and crosses. The tower became a prison during the Spanish invasion of Portugal. Belem Tower was known to protect the Portuguese capital from neighboring states and pirates.

To attempt to prevent enemy access to the Tagua River, the Castle of Belver was built. (pictured above) Following the defeat of King Sancho in the 12th century, the castle was occupied by the Order of the Hospitaliers. Castle of Belver has been designated a National Monument.

One of the most significant medieval strongholds in northern Portugal is Guimarães Castle. Eight rectangular towers make up the pentagram-shaped fortress walls. Guimarães became the official royal residence of the Count of Portugal, Henry of Burgundy, the father of the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques. In 1128 it withstood the Battle of Sao Mamede and was dubbed the birthplace of the Portuguese nation.

During the Roman era, Óbidos Castle was built in a cylindrical form with square towers. From the castle walls visitors can get amazing views of the surrounding countryside and the town of Óbidos. The castle features a mix of Gothic, Manueline, and Moorish architectural styles. The village surrounding the castle is known for its cobblestone streets. The castle is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for the town. Over the door that connects the two courtyards is a passageway that connects the palace and the Church of Santiago .Today it is a small romantic hotel.

The Castle of the Moors was built during the 8th and 9th centuries. It is one of the oldest preserved fortresses in Portugal. The fort sits in a prominent position atop a steep hill surrounded by a thick forest. Visitors can climb to the top for amazing views stretching over the lovely valleys towards the Atlantic Ocean.

The Castle of Viana do Alentejo is a Gothic masterpiece. It is a white and gray pentagonal structure dating back to the 14th century. The castle has lovely towers and is bordered on one side by a cathedral. It is a protected national monument.

Perched on a hill, the National Palace of Pena offers spectacular views of Sintra and the Atlantic Ocean. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. The castle was built in the Middle Ages, combining Gothic, Manueline, Moorish, and Renaissance styles. Its colorful facade is bright yellow and red, attracting visitors. It is surrounded by gardens and forests. Today the castle is used for state occasions by the President of the Portuguese Republic and other government officials.

Sao Jorge Castle sits on top of one of the seven hills of Lisbon. It was built by the Moors, and when Lisbon became the capital, King Alfonso III used it as his fortified residence. After an earthquake in 1755, the castle went through a renovation in the 20th century. Visitors can walk the castle walls, climb the towers for amazing views of Lisbon, and visit the small museum.

Built in the 12th century, Tomar Castle once belonged to the Knights Templar. Founded in 1160, the castle played a crucial role in the Reconquista, helping to secure Christian control over the region. It showcases a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Manueline architectural styles. In the 15th century, after Pope Clement V disbanded the Templars in 1312, the castle became the residence of King Manuel of Portugal. Tomar Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
