Beaufort Castle

Out of the 106 castles in Luxembourg during medieval times, approximately 50 of them are currently standing. Some of these have been restored to their prior glory while others are picturesque ruins.

Beaufort Castle

This castle is one of the oldest in Europe dating back to the 11th century, The castle is in the lovely countryside of Beaufort. In 1649, the governor of Luxembourg, Johann Baron von Beck, built a modern structure on the same grounds. The new renaissance castle functioned as a private residence up to 2012.

Bourglinster Castle

The castle dates from the 11th century and was rebuilt through the centuries. The castle is located in the village of Bourglinster in central Luxembourg It is a venue for events, meetings, or conferences.

One of the best restaurants in Luxembourg, the Michelin-starred La Distillerie, is housed in Bourglinster Castle.

The castle is the venue for the Festival de Musique de Chambre (Chamber Music Festival) organised by the Friends of Bourglinster Castle. Performances take place in the Salle des Chevaliers (Knight's Hall). The former stables are an arts center, managed by an artists' collective. A barn has been converted into a used book store, the Pabeierscheier (Paper Barn).

Bourschied Castle

Bourscheid Castle is a lovely drive up a winding, steep mountain road overlooking the Sure River. This is the largest castle in Luxembourg in the northeast. The castle has been standing since the year 1000 and the final stage in 1430 added many towers. Previously, the Lords of Bourscheid lived in the castle and were among the most influential knights in the region. These were loyal vassals of the Duke of Luxembourg and acted as advisors and fought at his side during battles. The Bourscheid family were replaced by the Metternich family in 1626, before the French Revolution put an end to feudal rule. In 1936 the ruins were declared a historcal monument. Since then, the Stolzemburg house and the gatekeeper’s apartment have been rebuilt and the towers have been given new roofs. Visitors can get amazing views over the beautiful landscape by climbing to the top. A thick forest surrounds the river.

Clervaux Castle

The castle sits on a rocky promontory overlooking Clervaux Village. During medieval times it was built as a fortress. There are amazing grand circular towers.

Clervaux Castle houses local government offices, a tourist office, a museum of castle dioramas and models, along an extensive international photography exhibit.

Esch-sur-Sure Castle

The Gothic Esch-sur-Sure Castle dates from the 13th century. It is in a lovely setting atop of a hill. The castle is located on a spur in the small town of Esch-sur-Sûre in the north-west of Luxembourg. Even though in ruins the castle is a historic site with lovely castle lakes.

Grand Ducal Palace

Grand Ducal Palace is located on the site of the 15th century town hall of Luxembourg which was destroyed by a gunpowder explosion in 1554. After it was rebuilt, it became the seat of the “Department des Forêts” in 1795 and until 1817 it was the Luxembourg Government Headquarters. The Governor of Luxembourg resided there from 1817 as the representative of the Dutch Grand Dukes. Prince Henry, Lieutenant-Representative of Luxembourg, used the Palace and renovated the interior in 1883 in preparation for a royal visit by Grand Duke William III.

Since the accession of the House of Nassau-Weilburg, the palace has been reserved exclusively for the Grand Duke and his family.

Larochette Castle

Larochette Castle was built in the 11th century overlooking the small town of Larochette in Central Luxembourg. The fortified castle is perched on the Luxembourg sandstone promontory. Restoration after a fire in 1565 the Crehange Manor building has been restored completely. Its historic walls are filled with temporary art exhibitions.Visitors can see the servant quarters, dungeons, and dining halls that were unaffected by the fire. Additionally, there are several mountain biking routes and footpaths in the area for fabulous views of the entire castle complex.

Urspell Castle

Urspelt Castle is located in the lovely little village of Urspelt. During the 20th century, the castle was used by the Germans in World War II and later as a hunting lodge. It fell into complete ruin during this time. Today it is classified as a national monument and after an extensive 3-year renovation process, Urspelt Castle is now a luxury hotel and event venue.

Vianden Castle

Vianden Castle is among the best and largest fortified castle in Luxembourg. It is a medieval castle with spires and turrets. It is located located in Vianden in the north of Luxembourg. Vianden Castle stands on a rocky promontory overlooking the River Our. The castle was recently restored to its former glory and plays host to the annual Medieval Festival in the summer. The castle is open to visitors throughout the year from 10 am to 4 pm every day. In March and October. Guided tours are available.
