West Virginia is known as the Mountain State. There is a lot of natural beauty all around.

The Augusta Heritage Center offers bluegrass music.

The New Tygart Flyer is a train that visitors can take to see the surrounding mountains and forests.

Visit the Cranberry Glades Botanical Gardens, which feature such plants as cranberries, sphagnum moss, skunk cabbage, and two carnivorous plants.

Fayetteville is located near the Gorge, where adventurers can enjoy a whitewater rafting trip. Nearby are cabins and campgrounds. This town particularly is known for its autumn foliage. Chartered as Fayetteville in 1883, the town was named in honor of the Marquis de LaFayette.

The historic Fayetteville Town Square serves as a central hub for community events and activities, reflecting the town's historic charm and vibrant atmosphere.

Enjoy a walking tour across the New River Gorge Bridge. You’ll see breathtaking scenery and unmatched views of the gorge.

The historic town of Harpers Ferry is found at the intersection of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. The town is known as the place where the raids of American abolitionist John Brown took place.

See the lovely St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church.

Hinton is a beautiful small town sitting along the New River. It is known for outdoor recreation.

Nearby is the Bluestone State Park stretching along the shores of Bluestone Lake. The lake was created by the Bluestone Dam. This lakeside park offers such outdoor recreation as boating and fishing. There are hiking trails along which you can see waterfalls. The park has an outdoor pool and lakeview cabins, or you can camp on the lake shore.

The Three Rivers Avian Center protects wild birds.

Morgantown is situated along the Monongahela River in north-central West Virginia and is the home of West Virginia University.

Nearby is the Coopers Rock State Park with beautiful views of the Cheat River Gorge.

Enjoy the West Virginia Botanic Garden, which features a variety of habitats, including wetlands, meadows, and virgin hemlock forests. There are walking trails and eight beautiful gardens to see.

Shepherdstown is a historic town with a Bavarian heritage. Its history dates back to 1762. The town is also known for being haunted, and visitors can take a haunted tour to learn about local history. Many of the town's historical buildings on German Street are now home to shops and cafés.

The Virginia and Ohio Canal Historic Park offers hiking and biking.

Haunted Places:

Visit the Shepherdstown Museum located in the Entler Hotel. Just beware of the two known spirits that roam the halls. One was once a wealthy businessman who lost his fortune in a card game and shot himself. He’s probably looking for his money. A young man injured in a duel, Peyton Smith was brought to the hotel and unfortunately died from his injuries. Now his spirit is heard to cry out for his mother.

At Shepherdstown University spirits inhabit McMurran Hall. This clock tower was once used as a Civil War hospital. Now disembodied voices, footsteps, and screams can be heard in the night. If anyone is strolling past at night, a shadowy figure can be seen peering from the clock tower.

For local history and outdoor recreation, visit White Sulphur Springs.

Greenbrier Resort is a local landmark and venue for festivals. It is located in the lovely setting of the Allegheny Mountain Range.

To commune with nature, take the Greenbrier Valley Trail. The trail offers hiking, biking, and horseback riding. It begins at Caldwell and passes through small towns, crosses 35 bridges, and heads on through two tunnels.

See the Monongahela National Forest. Within the forest boundaries lie some of the highest mountain peaks in the state, including the highest, Spruce Knob.
