Sightseeing in Luxembourg

Luxembourg City is the capital of Luxembourg.

The historic Old Quarter is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Old Quarter has many bridges with the beautiful Adolphe Bridge being a city landmark.

The National Museum of History and Art/MNHA is located in the historic Fish Market area. The museum displays art objects, archeological finds, furniture, tools, coins, arms, and documents on the history of the country. Guided tours in English are available.

Bock Cliff or Bockfiels has fortifications and cannon loopholes. Here is the entrance to the famous Casements, a network of underground passages carved from solid rock. These passages sheltered thousands of defenders, equipment, and horses. There were also workshops, kitchens, and slaughterhouses. The Casements date back to Spanish rule in 1644.

The Grand Ducal Palace is a lovely Renaissance building from 1572. It is the official residence of the reigning monarch Grand Duke Henri.

The Walls of the Corniche have been called “the most beautiful balcony in Europe”. They can be seen towering over the old city lying in the river valley.

The Gate of the Grund dates from 1632.

William Square/Place Guillaume II is among the city's largest open spaces. Formerly it was the site of a Franciscan convent and has been converted into a pedestrian zone. In the center is the equestrian statue of William II, King of Holland and Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

The beautiful Town Hall is at William Square. As well as the famous Tremont's Lions.

The 16th-century House of Raville is nearby with an impressive facade, well-restored balcony, and spiral staircase.

Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art/MUDAM displays contemporary art from world-renowned artists. Besides its permanent artwork exhibits the museum also features temporary and visiting displays. Educational programs and workshops are available.

Exploring the rest of Luxembourg

Echternach is a lovely town located on the bank of the River Sure. The river forms the border with Germany. The town is known for its centuries-old dancing procession occurring on Whit Tuesday, the Christian holiday that is celebrated after Pentecost Monday.. There are impressive old aristocratic houses, narrow streets, and ancient ramparts.

An amazing building is the 7th-century Abbey of Echternach. The Benedictine monastery is known for its museum. The monastery has four long wings built around a large square courtyard. It is home to the crypt of St Willibrord, the founder of the abbey. Its vaults are painted with frescoes that date back to the 10th century. It has become a tourist attraction due to the annual dancing procession on Whit Tuesday each year. Tourists, pilgrims, and clergy come to visit to witness or participate in the traditional ceremony.

The Luxembourg Ardennes is the place where you'll find forested plateaus, cliffs, wooded hills, and hidden valleys. This is a picturesque region with castles, fortresses, and farms on the hilltops.

Wiltz is one of the loveliest towns consisting of an upper and lower town. It is known for its famous open-air theater and music festival.

You'll enjoy the Battle of the Bulge Museum in Wiltz Castle.

Another WW II-themed museum is the General Patton Museum in Ettelbruck.

Clervaux is a quaint village that lies in a deep and narrow valley beside River Clerve.

The Benedictine Abbey of St Maurice and St Maur known as Clervaux Abbey was built in 1910. It was built in the Romanesque-Burgundian style. You can see exhibits about monastic life.

Bourscheid Castle in the village of Bourscheid sits atop a plateau. It is bordered by the Rivers Sure and Wark. This is a lovely fortress dominating the surrounding countryside. It dates from the 10th century. Self-guided audio tours and English-language guided tours are available. In the evenings the castle is lit up.

Upper Sure Natural Park is a beautiful park with plateaus, narrow valleys with wooded slopes, and the lake of the Upper Sure Dam. It is a popular place for leisure activities and watersports. You can take walking tours both guided and self-guided. The park includes fishing, swimming, sailing, and diving. The Nature Park Center is housed in an old cloth mill. It has a museum with interesting artifacts and exhibits that are related to the park and the local area.

Esch-sur-Sure is a beautiful small village in the mountains, skirted by the River Sure.

The village is dominated by Esch-sur-Sure Castle.

Walferdange is a picturesque village at the junction of the Alzette Valley. The village is known for its rose gardens. The village is also a popular shopping destination with its Walfer Shopping Center.

Walferdange Castle was the Grand Ducal residence until the end of the 19th century. It is located at the entrance to Grunewald Wood and being on one of the principal tourist routes in Luxembourg is now part of the University of Luxembourg.

Vianden is a picturesque town that lies on both banks of the River Our.

Vianden Castle dates back to the 9th century.

See Victor Hugo's house museum in Vianden. This is where the author lived during his exile in 1871. It has a collection of souvenirs of his visits to Vianden.

Parc Merveilleux in the town of Bettembourg is an amusement center. It has fairy-tale-themed attractions and rides.

There is also an interesting zoo with a large collection of exotic birds, reptiles, and other animals.
