Sailing Through Dreams: A Journey in Hạ Long Bay
Written by a Vietnamese traveler

There are places that exist in photographs and postcards, and then there are places that feel like stepping into a dream. Hạ Long Bay, located in Quảng Ninh Province in northern Vietnam, is one of those magical destinations. With thousands of limestone karsts rising dramatically from emerald waters, the bay is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also a symbol of Vietnam’s natural beauty.
For me, traveling to Hạ Long Bay is more than sightseeing—it is an immersion into nature’s poetry.
The First Glimpse
The journey begins with a three-hour drive from Hanoi. As the city fades behind, the scenery transforms into rice paddies, small villages, and rolling hills. When I finally arrive at the port, the sight before me feels surreal: towering limestone islands, each covered in lush green vegetation, scattered across the horizon like a painter’s masterpiece.
I board a traditional wooden junk boat, its sails glowing softly under the morning sun. The boat glides smoothly across the water, and soon, the hustle of the mainland disappears, replaced by silence broken only by the gentle splash of waves.
A World of Legends
Locals say that the name Hạ Long means “descending dragon.” According to legend, a dragon descended from the heavens and used its tail to carve the bay, creating the countless islands and caves. Sailing between these karsts, it’s easy to believe the story. The formations look alive, as if nature itself sculpted them with mythical hands.
Each island has its own name and legend. Some resemble animals—like Stone Dog Island or Fighting Cocks Islet—while others hold caves that feel like secret kingdoms.
Exploring the Hidden Wonders
One of the highlights of Hạ Long Bay is venturing into its caves. I visit Sung Sot Cave, or “Surprise Cave,” named for the awe visitors feel when stepping inside. Its massive chambers sparkle with stalactites and stalagmites shaped like chandeliers, dragons, and even elephants.
Later, I take a kayak to explore quieter corners of the bay. Paddling through narrow rock arches, I find hidden lagoons where the water is still and birds nest above the cliffs. In those moments, I feel completely alone with nature, as if I’ve discovered a world untouched by time.
Flavors of the Sea
No trip to Hạ Long Bay is complete without tasting its seafood. On the boat, a feast awaits: steamed prawns, grilled squid, clams cooked in lemongrass, and the famous chả mực (fried squid patties). Each dish carries the freshness of the ocean, and sharing this meal with fellow travelers creates a bond beyond words.
In the evening, the boat anchors in a quiet bay. Dinner is served under the stars, and the reflection of the moon on the water makes the moment unforgettable.
Sunrise on the Bay
The next morning, I wake before dawn. Standing on the deck, I watch as the first rays of sunlight slowly paint the limestone cliffs in shades of gold. The mist rises from the water, giving the bay an ethereal glow. Some travelers join a short Tai Chi session on the deck, moving gracefully as the day awakens.
It is in this stillness that I understand why Hạ Long Bay is not just a tourist destination but a spiritual journey. The beauty here is not loud—it whispers, and if you listen carefully, it tells stories older than any legend.
Beyond Hạ Long
While the bay itself is the main attraction, the surrounding region also holds treasures. Cát Bà Island offers hiking through national parks, while Tuần Châu Island is a gateway to modern resorts and entertainment. For those who seek authenticity, floating fishing villages still thrive, where locals live on houseboats and cast their nets daily. Meeting them adds a human touch to the grandeur of the landscape.
Farewell to a Dream
As my boat returns to the harbor, I glance back at the karsts fading into the horizon. Hạ Long Bay feels like a dream that lingers even after waking. It is a reminder of nature’s artistry and Vietnam’s timeless charm.
For travelers seeking wonder, peace, and connection, Hạ Long Bay offers more than just views—it offers a memory that will stay long after the journey ends.
