An hour north of Anchorage, Alaska you can find the beautiful Lake Eklutna with over fifteen miles of shoreline. This lake is one of the clearest lakes in the US located right next to the Eklutna Glacier. This lake is a great place for salmon and trout fishing. You can enjoy picnicking by the lake and even stay overnight at a campground. If you like you can go boating on the lake and from the boathouse you can rent kayaks. If you like biking there is a trail running parallel to the lake.

Lake Powell is the second-largest reservoir in the US and is manmade created due to the damming of the Colorado River at Glen Canyon on the Arizona/Utah border. This lake is among the prettiest lakes in the US. You'll see crimson sandstone cliffs that seem to drop into the turquoise and emerald waters of the lake, There are over 90 side canyons to explore and this massive lake stretches for nearly 200 miles from Arizona into Utah. You can explore Lake Powell by paddleboat or kayak.

On the shores of one canyon is the lovely natural Rainbow Bridge which is considered to be the world's longest natural arch.

Mono Lake is among the best lakes in the US. It is found near the eastern border of California near Nevada, The lake is estimated to be over 760,000 years old, There are some unusual animals that make their home here in the saltwater, among them brine shrimp. Along the lake, there are many alkali flies and birds that eat shrimp and flies. You can rent a boat to get out onto the lake or go hiking or biking along the trails offering great views of Mono Lake. There are beaches from which you can swim in the lake and there are picnic areas.

Lake Tahoe is a lovely crystal clear lake that is surrounded by mountains, It is located near Tahoe City and is on the border of two states - California and Nevada. It is a popular destination for tourists and is close to several ski resorts that overlook the river banks. The surrounding mountains reflect upon the water. There are national parks bordering it and you can enjoy restaurants, clubs, and casinos. In the wintertime, you can enjoy winter sports such as skiing, snowmobile riding, and snowshoeing. In the summer you can enjoy water sports, hiking and bicycling.

Lake Lanier in northern Georgia is a lake that covers almost 40,000 acres and after the construction of the Buford Dam over ten million people visit every year. Some events during the 1996 Summer Olympics were held at Lake Lanier. You can go out on the lake by boat or kayak, There are over twenty different beaches and more on the islands in the lake. You can find unique hotels to stay overnight.

Lake Martin is a swamp in south-central Louisiana located just east of Lafayette. Many animals make their home in the lake among them alligators, bullfrogs, cottonmouth snakes as wells as different species of birds like egrets and herons. You can take boat tours through the swamp with tour guides in pontoons. If you like you can rent paddleboats. There is also a boardwalk.

Lake Michigan is among the most beautiful lakes in the US and is the only one of the great lakes located entirely in the US. It stretches over 307 miles and has several cities located on its shore as well as thousands of beaches. There are islands like Beaver Island, Fox Island, Northerly Island, and Manitou Island located just off its borders. Lake Michigan is known for several national parks such as Hiawatha National Forest, Manistee National Forest, Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness, and Michigan Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

Lake Superior is another of the five great lakes and the largest freshwater lake by surface area in the entire world. There are 2,700 miles of shoreline that cover three states - Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin and crosses over into Ontario in Canada. It is a great lake for fishing with plenty of fish like smallmouth bass, northern pike, whitefish, salmon, trout, walleye and herring among other species. The scenery is beautiful with sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, sea caves, and sandy beaches. If weather permits the North Shore of Lake Superior can be surfed since it creates ocean-like waves.

The Lake of the Ozarks is right in the heart of Missouri and is among the most beautiful lakes in the US and the main tourist destination. It is bordered by world-class resorts and offers water sports such as boating, swimming, scuba diving, and sports fishing. There are also world-class golfing facilities near the lake. The lake is bordered by state parks and you can enjoy hiking and camping.

McDonald Lake is the largest lake in Glacier National Park. The park is located on the border between the U.S. and Canada. The park is a great place to commune with nature, get out on the lake, and go hiking. The closest resort town is Whitefish. Montana.

Avalanche Lake is located in Glacier National Park in Montana and is one of the best lakes in the US. To gain access to the lake you have to hike two miles on the Trail of the Cedars. Avalanche Lake is surrounded by lovely mountains which are reflected upon the water. During the winter the lake gets very cold since the water meld from one of the glaciers surrounding it. The best time to visit is the summer and there are many campsites nearby. Grizzly bears roam nearby and along the surrounding trails.

Lake Winnipesaukee is in the very center of New Hampshire and the largest lake in the state. The lake is located at the base of the White Mountains and has over 250 islands. There are boat tours that can take you to the islands and offer dinner cruises in the summer. You can swim, fish, and take a scenic train around the lake. You can find hiking trails and picnic areas on the mainland and the islands and there are three nature preserves. Lake Winnipesaukee is surrounded by some lovely towns among them Meridith with great restaurants and shopping options.

Lake George at the base of the Adirondack Mountains in the resort town of Lake George, New York is known as the Queen of American Lakes. Located in the northeastern part of New York State it is one of the most popular and loveliest of US lakes. Tourists visit most often in the summertime. Among the popular activities here is swimming, boating, fishing and whitewater rafting. There are many resorts and campsites to choose from and you can hike along many trails, see wild animals, and shop and dine in the nearby towns. In September there is a hot air balloon festival.

Crater Lake is a crater lake located in Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. It is known for its deep blue color. The lake was formed when Mount Mazama erupted nearly 8000 years ago and the crater was formed by the mountain eventually filling up with water creating a land-locked lake. The clear waters let sunlight penetrate nearly 400 feet down into the 1,943 ft deep lake. It is great for swimming, fishing, and scuba diving with nearly 2000 feet high cliffs surrounding Crater Lake.

Lake Jocassee is a man-made reservoir located in the Appalachian Mountains in South Carolina, The lake gets water that comes from the rivers flowing through the mountains. The waters are so clear that you can both swim and dive. You can boat and fish and some of the areas are surrounded by mountains and can only be reached by boats.

Lady Bird Lake is located in the city of Austin, Texas. It is a man-made lake that was formed by carving out the river in 1960. It was primarily made to accommodate a power plant and has become a popular recreation area. Fishing is allowed by license only. You can take canoes and kayaks on the lake. There are trails for hiking and biking next to the lake.

Yellowstone Lake is a part of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. It is the largest lake in the park, and one of the largest highly elevated freshwater lakes in North America. The lake freezes over in the winter except for some hot springs. Even in the summer the lake is very cold and swimming is not allowed but boats can be taken out on the lake. You can fish for cutthroat and lake trout.
