Reasons to Visit South Cornwall

You have to see it and experience it to believe it.

By Marshall StevensonPublished 7 years ago 3 min read

On the far southeast tip of England lies a place with a long association with the sea. In many ways, Cornwall embodies what the British Isles truly are. Cornwall has been home to pirates and smugglers, kings and castles, fishing boats and tea barges for hundreds of years. It’s about time you visited this amazing place, and here are nine reasons why you should.

It looks good every season of the year.

While Cornwall’s beaches are beautiful in summer, there’s just as much to enjoy in the winter storm season. There’s nothing quite as gorgeous as a fantastic Cornwall storm. In fact, the storms are so dramatic and amazing that Cornwall has gotten new life in recent years as a favorite destination for surfers.

You can eat fresh seafood at any time.

Whether you buy it yourself at the market and prepare a feast at one of the Roseland holiday cottages or head to a local restaurant, if you like seafood you can’t go wrong in southern Cornwall. You can sit by the sea and sip cocktails while enjoying fine dining and gourmet recipes, or, if you prefer, you can get fresh takeaway fish and chips.

You can visit castles.

Cornwall is simply full of castles. If you’re interested in history, you’ll definitely get your fill here. Visit Tintagel, where King Arthur is thought to have been born, or St. Mawes Castle and its twin on the other side of the river, built by King Henry VIII in the 1500s. There are castles in nearly every state, from crumbling ruins to perfectly preserved.

Some of the world’s best beer is here.

Cornwall has been proud of their brewing prowess for centuries. Some of the finest beers are available in pubs all over the country, and even the world, but a visit to Cornwall will let you taste what the locals keep for themselves. Take a tour of some of the breweries while you’re at it.

You’re interested in pirates.

Cornwall has played host to some famous pirates and smugglers in its time, and the people who live there today take pride in showing visitors all about it. Visit the Isles of Scilly where rowers were paid to rush out and save shipwrecks (looting them at the same time). Check out the Perranporth tunnels smugglers used to avoid the police. And don’t forget to visit Penzance.

You can attend an open air theatre.

The Minack Theatre is the best open-air theatre in Great Britain. There’s nothing like catching a Shakespearean play with the whole of the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop. If you are there during the right time of year, you might even see dolphins and basking sharks from your vantage point on the cliff.

To See the Stars

Light pollution is extremely low in Southern Cornwall. In fact, Roseland Peninsula and the surrounding environs have been officially given Dark Sky Discovery status. The views at night are stunning even to the naked eye. If you bring along your binoculars or a telescope, you’ll get to see even more.

You can learn about the rainforest.

It might seem hard to believe, but Cornwall is home to the Eden Project: an enormous indoor rainforest biome. You can tour it and learn all about sustainable growth while watching amazing tropical plants and insects interact.

You’ll never run out of pubs.

Pubs are a way of life in Cornwall, and wherever you go, you’ll never be far from a character-filled pub with lively banter, great stories, and fine ales and beers. Every house has its own unique character, and you are sure to find one that you’ll love on your visit.

There’s a lot to do in Cornwall and these suggestions have just scratched the surface. Why not visit for yourself and see everything in person?
