The Phuket Aquarium is located in the mid-western part of Phuket Thailand in Cape Panwa. It offers a variety of aquatic life from around Thailand and Phuket. Outside there are some mangrove trees and other vegetation as well as a sea turtle habitat. The aquarium boasts that it is educational, although I didn't find myself learning anything while I was there. It is however an inexpensive way to spend some time out of the sun and is a good value for the price. For a couple hundred baht you can easily spend an hour or 2 walking the interior and exterior of the aquarium viewing aquatic life in tanks.

The aquarium by Western standards is small and limited. The displays are typical of what we see in fish stores back home. However there is a great variety of fish from around Thailand.

The lion fish display allows a look at a fish you normally would see diving in areas off the coast of Phuket. The tank is a fair size and you can clearly see the features of the fishes crest up close. Kids seem to really enjoy the way these guys look.

If you are a fan of the Disney classic Finding Nemo, you can visit him and his co-star Dory at the Phuket Aquarium. Although the clown fish and Dory are not in the same tanks, it is nice to see a familiar face when visiting.

The shark tank located about half way into the displays seems a little small for the school of sharks swimming around inside. At first glance you may think the sharks are anxious from being kept in such a small enclosure. They may well be, however sharks need to continually move to force water through their gills to breathe.

To get to the rear portion of the aquarium building you need to walk through a tunnel that goes under water. In this enclosure you can see animals like the giant Gruper, and when they are not in their regular habitat in the secondary building, various species or Ray.

In the rear portion of the main building at the Phuket Aquarium they have several displays of deep water marine life. Various crabs, stuffed fish and a sea horse display and Jelly Fish in a small cylindrical tank.

Once you have walked through the building there is more to see. If you head through the gift shop and out the rear of the building you will find many varieties of plant life.

There is a hatchery for sea turtles and other animals located a bit farther back in smaller buildings, and just past those was my favorite part of the visit. There are various species of Sea Turtles in holding pens and a larger habitat that they live and swim in. I sat for a good 40 minutes and watched them glide around the water and spit at each other. Probably one of the most memorable and peaceful points in the whole experience. Check it out in the video above.

The Phuket Aquarium is a small, underfunded aquarium in Mid-West Phuket. By North American standards it is not very exciting and although it is a good value for it's money I wouldn't say it is a must visit attraction while visiting Phuket. If you are looking to get out of the heat or if it's raining and you want a way to spend a few hours away from the hotel you should give it a go.
