Los Angeles to Seattle

The Subtle Differences You Should Know About These 2 Cities

By Christina RichardsonPublished 7 years ago 2 min read

A few weeks ago I took a trip to Vancouver, WA to surprise my best friend for her graduation. That part was really fun.

I then decided to stay a while longer visiting Seattle, which took three hours by train. The sudden change in atmosphere was kind of overwhelming, and here are just some things I noticed while I was visiting.

1. Unlike Los Angeles, Seattle has integrated electric Lime Bike lanes. Now you're probably wondering what Electric Lime Bikes are.

Now, normal Lime Bicycles don't require charging since they act as a normal bicycle. Electric Lime Bicycles, however, require a special charge, from what I saw on the outskirts of Seattle, WA. There are many green dashes in the bike lanes and even special turn-out spots for these bikes.

The people of Seattle really know how to take care of their public property unlike those in LA.

2. Seattle seems to be more openly accepting of those who identify with the LGBT community.

Don't get me wrong, Los Angeles is like this as well, but the number of Pride flags and stickers outside businesses that say that that particular establishment was a Safe Place. It overwhelmed me with joy how normal these things were becoming.

It doesn't surprise me that Seattle is also one of LGBT's Friendliest Cities in America. Of course, it was also Pride Month when I visited.

3. Many people are very left with their views.

4. Lots of Green

Even though Seattle is a city and currently under a lot of construction, it caught me off-guard when I left for the airport. There was an abundance of pine trees that littered the sides of the freeway. The scene was similar to that of Vancouver, WA when I first arrived.

5. Los Angeles isn't the best.

There's a lot I can add into this—but I won't. For instance, rent in Los Angeles is about twice as high as it is in Seattle. Los Angeles also isn't as clean with their streets. Sure, Southern California is like a big melting pot, but the least our people can do is pick up after themselves.

6. Trash, Compost, and Recycling

Seattle has integrated a more effective way of sorting out waste in public areas and businesses. Now, when I first saw these in a restaurant, I went to my second day in the city, I was rather pleased, and wished more cities could integrate this ingenious idea.

7. Airport Security

Okay, so I was really surprised by what transpired at Sea-Tac Airport on my way back to LAX. Their airport security was so rude (I was in the Security Checkpoint 1). They were rather impatient and gave off attitude. It bothered me because it seemed like they all just started their shift. I didn't understand why they were acting that way and I didn't ask questions—I didn't want to have my bag checked or something.

I'd rather have the security I went through when I checked in at LAX, they were much friendlier and relaxed.

All in all, this wasn't meant to be a comparison type of article, but I couldn't help but notice subtle differences between these two popular American cities. I hope this brings some clarity to those who were confused with a few things between the cities.

P.S. And no, the Grey's Anatomy hospital is not in Seattle, it's located in LA.
