Living Abroad and Being Away from My Parents for the First Time

Living abroad

By Danielle BoersmaPublished 7 years ago 2 min read

Hey there!

My name is Danielle and in 2018 I made the plan to live and work in the U.S.A! And guess what I made my dream come true!

It all started when I saw an ad on Facebook. It said that you can work in the USA. At that time I was finishing up my education and I had not thought about my plan after school. And yes I am 21 with a degree in something but I have still no plan (life struggles). So I thought why not? I put all my information in the system and thought maybe I will do it. Shortly after that I went home.

The next day I got a call and normally I do not pick up the phone, but this time I had the feeling to pick it up and so I did. It was someone from the agency. I had already forgotten that I had done that and was in shock. The woman asked my quickly some questions and before I knew it, I sat in the train to my information night.

So I have never been in this city but thank god we have apps on our phones with navigation. After a short 15 minute walk I arrived at the place. It still took me 30 minutes to find my way around but finally I was sitting and listening to someone who told us all (there were four other persons in the room) about how it worked. I became so excited for this! So the next day I prepared my profile on the website and got ready.

Two months later I got to tell my family and friends that I am officially going to the U.S.A in July. I still needed to get my degree but I was so ready for my adventure. I still had to work to get all the money and it gave me a lot of stress but right now I am in the U.S.A. writing this.

I said to myself when I was 16 years old that I always wanted to travel and right now I am doing it. Well, I am still working but I am having a blast here.

It is also my first time being away from my parents and wow it gives me so much freedom. I am not living alone. Instead I am living with a family in an amazing house. So I still do not have all the freedom that I want but it is still great. What I have learnt from this is that I have a strong relationship with my parents even though when I was home I did not thought so. I try to video chat them every day and that is such a relief because I can speak my own language and I can just them everything. I tell them if I have met a boy or if I am going through something. I have learnt that having people around you even if you live in a different continent, is so important!

I have realised one of my biggest dream when I was 20 and I want to tell you that it does not matter how young or old you are. If you set your mind to it, you can do it! It is hard sometimes but I am learning so much about myself and other people. I just want to say “just do it.”

If you are curious to my adventures be sure to check my page because I have just started ;)

Kisses, Danielle
