Get Bedazzled by This Gorgeous Chinese City
Guilin is a medium-sized city in North Guangxi, China that needs to be explored during a trip to China. Guilin is one of the most-visited destinations in China for the basic fact that there are so many tourist attractions in and around this gorgeous little city. Situated in southern China, the vibrant city lies in the midst of the iconic Karst Mountains, well-known across the world for the lush green landscapes, the famous Li River, limestone rock formations, food cuisine, and the Longji Rice Terraces. The rationale for this blog is to list the things to see and do in Guilin.

The Time I Went to North Korea
I celebrated the millennium New Year three times. In chronological order, I celebrated the traditional ‘Western’ New Year on 31 December, I celebrated the Lunar New Year in North Korea, and then I celebrated Thai Songran in Bangkok. Each place was very different but the three together made for a great start to the 2000s. Perhaps my North Korean holiday was the most memorable, for many reasons.

A Week In the Philippines
I had the privilege to spend a week in the Philippines. I was so busy, but I was buzzing and it was amazing. The only downside to the holiday was coming home, feeling depressed and catching a nasty virus. That doesn’t take away the good times I had though. I was very tired, and now I’m writing this I can understand why: a 13 hour flight and severe jet lag. Because I was only there for a week, I wanted to cram as much in as possible.

Becoming a Fishermen
Let me begin by saying that I'm not going to preach my Christian values or ideas in this story. This is merely how I learned to fish out in the ocean, or rather not to fish; on a nearly deserted island in Thailand? Sound interesting? Did I get a hook?

On Language, All That
1) Swahili has increasingly grown on me. The fruit song is as catchy as the "jambo jambo." Sometimes it flows through me, and my pronunciation is noticeably different from that of my peers, being filtered through my Spanish-speaking tongue positions. Jo says you are so incredible! You learn so fast! She is always so encouraging. I have always wanted to learn a third language, and hence I have flirted with French ever since the fourth grade. But after all these years I have still not taken a formal course, and with nobody to practice with, hence je ne parlais pas (I did not speak in French). A few Swahili crash courses and I was up and running. Practicing a language is such a big part of learning. It unravels world views and the things one takes for granted.

Home (N.)
Home is so much greater than the place you were born in. It’s both the place where you were taken care of and the place that taught you to take care of yourself. Yet, when we’re asked the classic “Where’s home for you?” we immediately spell out our hometowns. This is only natural, as these places are usually also home to our parents, our grandparents, our dogs (or cats, I’m not here to judge) and our childhood friends. But if you’re someone who’s built a life somewhere else, you know deep down that this answer is no longer entirely true.

What Netflix Won't Tell You About Medellín, Colombia. Top Story - December 2019.
It's 3:54 AM on Tuesday 17th April. I'm sitting in Medellín's José María Córdova International Airport. I'm awaiting our flight back home, through Miami, quietly contemplating the last 30 days my family and I spent here. Like everyone else that I told in the weeks leading up to the trip, I too had my reservations about Colombia. My girlfriend suggested the trip as I was transitioning out of a job. It would be a good opportunity to change gears and figure out our next move. We'd take our three-year-old out of school for the rest of the term and check it out. It took some convincing from her, but I was eventually sold (she also had my credit card information, so all the chips were against me). My family and friends, not so much. Their comments ranged from:
