Secrets Written in Her Rock
A wreck with tales to tell at Naikoon, Haida Gwaii. The islands have gone by many names. To the people who call the islands home, Haida Gwaii means “island of the people,” it is a shortened version of an earlier name, Haadala Gwaii-ai, or “taken out of concealment.”

Taking the Road Not Taken
THE BUILDUP So here I am in my late fifties; I've been lucky, fortunate, or whatever, to have traveled a lot. My acquaintances consider me to be well traveled, even worldly maybe, due to some splashy social media posts and assorted adventures over the years.

Part IX : Memorable Moments that Could Only Happen in Plattsburgh
The last we left him, poor Tim had hitched a ride from Albany to Plattsburgh. Matt, Steve and Andy had enough of his unseemly antics, and when they got to Albany, they dumped him on me. At the time of Part VIII’s writing, I did not have the gory details on what actually got Tim expelled from his ride. But a little email back and forth from the boys and here it is. Enjoy and please don’t judge.

Windows: Slice of LA Life
The street here is much busier than the one near my new apartment, and even the place I was at prior to that, a house in a cul-du-sac off of a busy freeway exit. Here, next to the Metro Blue Line, we are setting up machines for projects. It’s a location in LA that is most certainly bigger on the inside. The curb appeal is quite low for most structures in this area, but that can’t be helped with Los Angeles’ version of the L as well as one of the busiest freeways in the country across the street.

Tropical Snowfall
The pile of plastic toys in the faded stroller was out of place on the empty beach. I had quite literally stumbled upon this tiny stretch of paradise by chance, and I am not proud: I’d snuck down the narrow alley way to pee after having an early brunch of two titanic Bloody Marys. As I squatted there, trying to maintain my balance, I turned my head and was almost blinded by the brilliant blue of the morning sky against the white sand at the other end of the passage.

The Final Find
Some say there is always an unexpected change of course in the wind, meaning life can take a turn for the worse or the better in a flash of an eye. The wind changes directions in an instant, without warning, measuring up to some other result. I never thought this was an actual occurrence in life itself, that the way we did things would ever take a toll, not to the extent that it has for me anyway. The more I think about it, the more I chose not to understand it and I wonder if it's just a defense mechanism in which my brain is just trying to control or mask my feelings. Either way, there is a story here with all this rambling, one in which is hard to explain but I will do my best.

Forget the Road Less Traveled
“By the time we got to Woodstock, we were half a million strong.” — Joni Mitchell In 1969, our high school only had a handful of actual hippies. Just by chance, my locker was near the leader of that small pack, and I spent a lot of time talking to them about music. In May, during the last week of 8th grade, they were all excited as I approached. “Hey, Darryl, we’re all going to load into Gary’s VW bus and drive up to New York this summer. There’s going to be this bitchin’ concert, man, supposed to be a lot of bands. Wanna come?”
