What Signs?
It was a casual Saturday on my day off from my job at the Air Force base back in the early 1990s. Garden of the Gods was a popular spot for me to explore and I often went alone as no one in my unit was interested in going hiking or mountain biking with me. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon and I made my way along the trails, passed by the visitor center, then around to discover even more trails and soon found one that led me to the massive rock formations.

The Motel Sign
It was the late 1970’s – early 1980’s from the back seat of my mother’s brown Toyota Corona that similar motel signs were seen. I learned to love seeing those signs in the late starry, moonlit nights as my road-weary, sleepy eyes opened because I felt the car coming to a stop. The brightly illuminated, oh-so retro signs indicated I’d be sleeping in a bed versus a sleeping bag… on hard ground… in a tent. And I got to watch TV! Albeit in a shifty, quintessential, stale-cigarette-smoke-smelling motel room. Cable and remote controls weren’t an option back then and the three channels on the black and white dial television broadcasting Fantasy Island, The Love Boat, Chips and The Dukes of Hazard kept me entertained.

How to Get the Best out of Your Visit to Bluewaters Island in Dubai
Another artificial island found in Dubai, Bluewaters Island is located off Jumeirah Beach. A whopping amount of money was poured into the construction of the island. The island is linked to the mainland by a bridge and an overpass. The main attraction here is Ain Dubai; the massive Ferris wheel offering spectacular views over Dubai Marina. Apart from the Ferris wheel, the island has a number of hotels and restaurants.

A Moment in Time
Early mornings on Maui spent paddleboarding out across the glassy open waters have become like a homecoming for my soul. The gentle golden light glistening across the sea as the sun just begins to peak over the top of Haleakala and illuminate the skies with the most glorious and vibrant pastel colors, the sweet sound of the song birds waking up in the tree tops off in the distance, and the expansiveness and peace that comes from gently floating out in the middle of the ocean.

An Encounter with Lions
As I planned my trip to Zimbabwe, I remember talking to Sarah my excursion specialist about wanting to do something extra special for my birthday. Every year I plan a trip to a new and exciting place, and I wanted to make sure my tour to Victoria Falls was unforgettable. Sarah listened to my explanation of a wanting an amazing adventure, and excitedly told me that I have to check out the lion cubs. Immediately my mind pictured adorable little cubs that were eager to explore their surroundings and play with adoring tourists. As a cat lover, I couldn’t think of a better way to indulge my wanderlust with my partiality for felines. The built-up excitement for my trip was laser focused on that experience.

Passport to the Bottom of the Sea
“Shark!” He clearly wanted to shout it but being underwater eliminates that option. For most people that word produces heart pounding palpitations. But not when your goal is to be immersed in the world at the bottom of the sea and observe the unique creatures that inhabit it. Instead, after waving frantically, he quickly put his hands together to make the shark fin sign hoping we would not miss it.

Deer Diddly Squat
It was an early winter morning, I had decided to venture through Cade’s Cove in Tennessee for my Landscape Photography class assignment. It’s a huge park in the Smoky Mountains, and I wanted to get some images of the wildlife while I was there. Since it’s about 4 hours from where I live, I decided the night before that I would just stay awake and pull an all nighter to make sure I would leave on time, so that way I could get there as the park opened at sunrise. Ideally, I should have gotten a cheap room in the area or camped out the night before, but I planned this trip fairly last minute.
