Kedarkantha Trek: Walking into a Winter Wonderland
Kedarkantha trek is calling you. Located in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary of Uttarakhand.

If you dream of trekking through snowy forests, camping under a million stars, and standing atop a summit with a 360-degree view of the majestic Himalayas, the Kedarkantha trek is calling you. Located in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary of Uttarakhand, this trek is the perfect blend of adventure, natural beauty, and soul-stirring experiences. Whether you are a seasoned trekker or a beginner seeking your first summit, Kedarkantha welcomes everyone with open arms.
Here's my story of how I discovered a winter wonderland beyond the noise of the world.
The Journey Begins: Reaching Sankri Village
Our journey started from Dehradun, a bustling city that slowly gave way to winding mountain roads. After a 10-hour drive filled with pine forests, mountain rivers, and quaint villages, we reached Sankri, the base village for the Kedarkantha trek.
Sankri, sitting at an altitude of about 6,400 feet, felt like a place lost in time. Traditional wooden houses, friendly villagers, and the crisp, cold air made me realize that the real adventure was about to begin. As night fell, the sky came alive with stars, and excitement built up around the campfire as our trek leader briefed us about the days ahead.
There’s something magical about starting a journey in such a rustic, untouched place—it instantly makes you feel connected to nature.
Into the Woods: Trekking to Juda Ka Talab
The next morning, with backpacks strapped and trekking poles ready, we set off towards Juda Ka Talab. The trail took us deep into dense forests of oak and pine, their branches heavy with freshly fallen snow. Each step on the snow made a satisfying crunch, and with every breath, wisps of cold air escaped into the morning sky.
As we climbed higher, Sankri disappeared behind us, replaced by stunning views of snow-draped trees and faraway peaks. After a few hours of hiking, we reached Juda Ka Talab—a frozen lake surrounded by ancient trees. Legend says this lake was created from water droplets falling from Lord Shiva's hair.
Camping beside the frozen lake was an experience in itself. The night was colder than I had ever experienced, but sitting by the bonfire, sipping hot soup, and gazing at a sky full of stars made it one of the warmest nights of my life, at least in spirit.
Marching Towards the Summit: Juda Ka Talab to Base Camp
The trail from Juda Ka Talab to the Kedarkantha Base Camp was even more enchanting. The snow was thicker, and the climb steeper, but the views kept us energized. Along the way, small clearings opened up to reveal mesmerizing vistas of towering Himalayan peaks like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak.
Reaching the base camp at around 11,200 feet felt like an achievement in itself. Our campsite overlooked sprawling meadows covered in thick snow, framed perfectly by the mighty Himalayas. As the sun set behind the mountains, the sky turned brilliant shades of orange and purple, reflecting beautifully off the snow.
That night, knowing that tomorrow was summit day, I could hardly sleep. My heart raced with anticipation.
The Final Climb: Sunrise at Kedarkantha Summit
Summit day started early—very early. We began our ascent at around 3 AM, under a canopy of stars and with only our headlamps lighting the path. The cold was biting, and the climb was tough, but adrenaline and excitement kept me moving.
As we neared the summit, the first rays of the sun kissed the peaks, painting them golden. And finally, after a challenging push, we stood at the Kedarkantha Summit, towering at 12,500 feet.
The view from the top was indescribable. Peaks stretched endlessly in every direction, and below us, the world looked peaceful and perfect. The sheer beauty of standing above the clouds, surrounded by Himalayan giants, made every step of the trek worth it.
We spent a few unforgettable moments soaking it all in—laughing, crying, hugging—before beginning our descent back to base camp.
The Descent: Sliding Back with a Heart Full of Memories
The way down was a lot more fun than I expected! Thanks to the thick snow, we literally slid down some of the slopes, laughing like children. The descent gave us more time to admire the beautiful surroundings we had hurried through earlier.
We trekked back through Juda Ka Talab and then onward to Sankri, where warm food and cozy beds awaited us. Tired but overjoyed, we ended our journey with hearts full of gratitude and minds full of memories.
Kedarkantha wasn’t just a trek; it was an experience that filled my soul with a happiness I hadn’t known I was missing.
Final Thoughts: Why Kedarkantha Should Be Your Next Trek
