I’ll walk you through my unforgettable journey from the hippie trails of Kasol to the mystical meadows of Kheerganga.

Nestled deep in the Parvati Valley of Himachal Pradesh, the Kasol-Kheerganga trek with camping is one of the most soul-refreshing adventures in the Indian Himalayas. Combining scenic beauty, spiritual vibes, natural hot springs, and cozy camps under starlit skies, this trek is a must-do for both beginner and seasoned trekkers.

Whether you're looking to take a break from your 9-to-5 routine, discover hidden mountain villages, or simply want to breathe in crisp mountain air—this experience has everything. In this blog, I’ll walk you through my unforgettable journey from the hippie trails of Kasol to the mystical meadows of Kheerganga, with camping in between that turned the whole trip into a magical escape.

Starting the Journey – From Bustling Kasol to Calm Barshaini

The adventure begins in Kasol, a quaint town often referred to as the “Amsterdam of India.” Situated along the banks of the Parvati River, this place has a chilled-out vibe with Israeli cafés, reggae music, and travelers from all over the world. I spent a day here soaking in the energy, walking along the riverside, and feasting on shakshuka and Nutella pancakes.

The next morning, I headed to Barshaini, the starting point of the Kheerganga trek, about 16 km from Kasol. Shared cabs are easily available, and the scenic drive is dotted with deodar trees, apple orchards, and views of snow-capped peaks.

Barshaini is the last point where vehicles can go, and from here, the trail splits into three popular trekking routes: via Nakthan, Kalga, and Tosh. I chose the Nakthan route for my ascent, which is the most scenic and frequently used path.

Into the Wild – Trekking through the Forest Trails and Waterfalls

The trek from Barshaini to Kheerganga is around 12 km and takes about 4–5 hours depending on your pace. The trail is moderately difficult but incredibly rewarding. What makes it special is the ever-changing landscape. You start with a dirt path flanked by pine trees, then cross charming wooden bridges over gushing streams, and later find yourself walking beside waterfalls and rock cliffs.

One of the highlights was crossing the majestic Rudra Nag Waterfall, a perfect spot to take a breather. The sound of the cascading water and the surrounding silence of the mountains was pure therapy. The trail also winds through apple orchards and tiny Himalayan homes where locals offer Maggi, chai, and sometimes even stories from their childhood in the hills.

Reaching Kheerganga – A Meadow from a Dream

As the final few kilometers stretch on, your body may begin to tire, but the anticipation keeps you going. And then suddenly, you emerge from the dense forest into a wide-open meadow nestled in the clouds—Kheerganga.

The first thing that hits you is the freshness in the air, followed by the jaw-dropping view of snow-draped mountains and dense green hills all around. The meadow is dotted with vibrant tents, cafés, and smiling faces of fellow trekkers who have also made the journey. But the best part? The natural hot water spring.

I wasted no time and jumped into the Parvati Kund, a small pool fed by thermal springs. The warm water soothed my tired muscles as I sat there gazing at the sky, surrounded by peaks. They say the water has healing powers—and in that moment, I truly believed it.

Camping in Kheerganga – A Night Under the Stars

Camping in Kheerganga was the highlight of the entire trek. My tent faced the open sky and overlooked the distant mountain ranges. As night fell, the temperature dipped sharply, but that didn’t stop people from gathering around bonfires, sharing stories, and playing music.

The sky looked unreal—like a glitter bomb had gone off. I spent hours stargazing, spotting constellations, and just lying in my sleeping bag with a sense of deep peace. There’s something incredibly grounding about sleeping under the stars in the lap of the Himalayas. No phone signal. No noise. Just you, nature, and the stars.

The camps in Kheerganga are basic but cozy, with sleeping bags, mats, and hot meals. I had a simple dinner of dal-chawal and chai, but somehow, it tasted better than any fancy meal I’ve had in the city.

Descending via Kalga – A Hidden Gem of the Valley

The next morning, after a light breakfast and another dip in the hot spring, I began my descent. This time, I took the Kalga route, which is slightly longer but offers a peaceful and less crowded path through dense deodar forests and wooden houses straight out of a postcard.

The village of Kalga itself is like a secret haven, with charming homestays, blooming flowers, and complete silence. If you have time, I highly recommend staying here for a night before heading back to Kasol.

The descent took about 3.5 hours, and before I knew it, I was back at Barshaini, wrapping up a trek that felt like a dream I didn’t want to wake up from.

Best Time to Visit and Handy Travel Tips

The best time for the Kasol-Kheerganga trek is from April to June and September to November. During these months, the weather is perfect for trekking, and the landscape is lush green. Avoid monsoons due to slippery trails and winter months if you're not prepared for snow trekking.

Things to carry for Kheerganga trek:

Waterproof trekking shoes

Light woolens and thermal wear

Raincoat or poncho

Power bank and flashlight

Water bottle and dry snacks

ID proof and some cash (no ATMs nearby)

Also, always check the weather forecast before planning, and remember to leave no trash behind. Respect nature, and it will reward you in unexpected ways.

Final Thoughts

The Kasol-Kheerganga trek with camping is not just a trek; it's a journey into a more peaceful, more connected version of yourself. It offers a rare chance to unplug from the digital world and reconnect with nature and people in the most organic way.

So if you’re craving an escape that combines nature, spirituality, adventure, and serenity—lace up your boots, pack your backpack, and head for the hills. Kheerganga is calling.
