In the Lap of Mountains

A Northern Pakistan Travel Diary

By MUHAMMAD ARIF Published 6 months ago 3 min read

Pakistan — the very phrase brings to mind snow-capped peaks, crystal-clear lakes, ancient glaciers, lush green valleys, and roads that snake through some of the world’s most dramatic landscapes. This is a place where nature reigns supreme, and for travelers like me, it feels like a dreamland waiting to be explored.

NORTH PAKISTAN

My journey to the North started in Islamabad, Pakistan’s peaceful capital. As I left behind the busy streets and entered the green hills of Murree and Nathia Gali, I could already feel the air becoming cooler and fresher. The real adventure, however, began when I hit the famous Karakoram Highway, often called the Eighth Wonder of the World. This incredible road connects Pakistan with China and passes through the mighty Karakoram mountain range — home to some of the highest peaks on Earth, including K2.

My first major stop was the enchanting Kaghan Valley. The winding roads, pine forests, and small waterfalls made every turn a picture-perfect moment. I stayed in Naran, a small but vibrant town that serves as a base for exploring the surrounding beauty. The local markets were alive with tourists, and the scent of fresh chapli kebabs filled the evening air.

One morning, before sunrise, I hired a jeep and set out to see Saif-ul-Malook Lake — a jewel of Kaghan. The ride was bumpy, but the sight that greeted me was worth every second. The lake sat calmly, reflecting the towering Malika Parbat in its icy blue water. Local legends say fairies come here at night, and standing there in that silence, surrounded by mountains, it was easy to believe.

Next, I traveled further North to Gilgit-Baltistan. The road trip itself felt like an adventure movie. Crossing Babusar Top — a high mountain pass — was both thrilling and chilling, with snow still resting on the peaks even in summer.

Hunza Valley was my next destination, and nothing could have prepared me for its sheer beauty. Karimabad, the heart of Hunza, is a charming town surrounded by mighty mountains. I spent my days exploring the centuries-old Baltit and Altit Forts, listening to stories of ancient rulers and traders who once passed through this valley on the Silk Road.

In the evenings, I sat with the locals, sipping Hunza tea and tasting fresh apricots, cherries, and apples straight from the orchards. The people of Hunza are famous for their hospitality and long lives — perhaps because they live so close to nature and so far from pollution and stress.

From Hunza, I made my way to Passu — a village famous for the dramatic Passu Cones. These sharp, cathedral-like peaks stand guard over the Hunza River and make you feel small yet alive in the best way. I also crossed the famous Hussaini Suspension Bridge — one of the most dangerous bridges in the world. My heart was racing, but the view made every shaky step worth it.

Finally, my journey took me to Skardu, the gateway to some of Pakistan’s most iconic treks and mountain expeditions. Here, I visited the serene Shangrila Resort, sat by the calm Satpara Lake, and explored Shigar Fort — a beautiful piece of history turned into a welcoming guest house. I also spent a night under the stars in the cold desert of Skardu, where sand dunes meet snow-covered peaks — a sight so unique that it stays with you forever.

Throughout this journey, I realized that Northern Pakistan is not just about landscapes — it’s about moments. The warmth of the people, the taste of simple, fresh food, the thrill of rough roads and high passes, and the calm that only mountains can offer — all these things combined to make this trip unforgettable.

If you ever wish to lose yourself and find yourself at the same time, Northern Pakistan is the place to go. It is wild yet welcoming, remote yet reachable, and timeless in every sense. Someday, I hope to return, because once you’ve sat in the lap of these mountains, a part of your heart always stays there.

So, pack your bag, charge your camera, and let the mountains write their story on your soul.
