The sunny beachside town of Darwin is an ideal vacation spot, which is why it's so popular with both the tourists as well as the townsfolk. It's got everything from beautiful beaches to a national park. If you've only got three days to spend in this city, here are some of the things you should do while you're there on holiday.

On Day One

As Darwin can get very hot, its beaches are a hotspot of activity since they present the perfect opportunity to cool off and beat the heat. Spend your first day in Darwin beach hopping! How many beaches does Darwin have? Quite a few it turns out. But the two most popular ones are Vestey's Beach and Mindil Beach. In addition to the usual beachside activities, Mindil Beach also offers a sunset market that's fun to experience. Stop by one of the many stalls and grab a bite to eat or a piece of locally-created arts and crafts. If you're staying at one of the many Darwin hotels or serviced apartments such as Oaks Darwin Elan Hotel, Mindil Beach is within easy reach. By cab, it's just a 5-minute drive away. Some of the other beaches in Darwin include Galaru Beach and Casuarina Beach. Casuarina Beach is another beach that the city has to offer, however, do watch out for crocodiles as they are sometimes spotted at the beach.

On Day Two

Around one and a half hour's drive away from Darwin, you'll find Litchfield National Park. On your second day in Darwin, plan an excursion here to enjoy a day of adventure in the great outdoors. This park attracts well over a quarter of a million visitors each year and offers plenty to see and do. There are many beautiful waterfalls inside the park. You can simply choose to enjoy the views or even hop in for a quick swim beneath some of them. Another thing that the park is known for, weirdly enough, is the giant magnetic termite mounds. Interestingly, they have been cleverly constructed by the termites in such a way that parts of the mounds align with the direction North-South and the other parts with the East-West. Just hold a compass to them and you'll be able to see just how accurately they've been built! On a side note, these mounds are also well over a century old!

In case you want to spend the night at Litchfield National Park before heading back to Brisbane for your last day in the city, note that there are campsites and caravan sites within proximity to the entrance of the park.

On Day Three

The George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens are a great place to explore on your final day in Darwin. You can enjoy a laid back day taking in the scenic views and catching your breath as you prepare for the next leg of your journey, to wherever that may be. Situated within about two kilometres of the city centre, the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens are a popular attraction in the city. The things you can do there include exploring over 40 hectares of garden area, including a rainforest area. There is also a sensory garden here where you can see countless butterflies. If your feet are weary from all your activities over the previous two days, consider taking a Segway ride through the gardens instead of exploring it on foot; a guide will accompany you and answer all your questions regarding the history of the gardens as well as any queries you might have about the plants or creatures that call it home.
