Indonesia's East Java capital, Surabaya, is a bustling metropolis that combines modern amenities with a touch of the past. Getting around Surabaya could serve as a thrill. Here's a comprehensive guide of available modes of transportation when you are in Surabaya, enjoying a wonderful vacation.

First and foremost - decide where you are going to stay

When you are selecting your hotel for your stay, choose a business hotel in Surabaya that offers easy access to the places you want to visit. You may select the HARRIS Hotel and Conventions Bundaran Satelit or a similar property in the town for your convenience.

Public Transport

Surabaya has public buses, however, they may be packed and not necessarily the most pleasant choice. While the locals are friendly and obliging, English may not be frequently spoken. Therefore, be prepared for some linguistic challenges. Minivans and small public buses called Mikrolet and Angkot run through specific city routes. Although they are reasonably priced, they may get crowded.

Feel free to use ride-sharing apps

Get the maximum use of the latest technologies when you are in Surabaya. Gojek and Grab are two of the most popular apps used by the locals and this is considered a relatively cheap way to get around the city, especially if you are in a rush. You may opt for motorbike taxis (commonly known as ojeks) or car rides when you use these services, and this is a safe option as well.

More about taxis

When in Surabaya, you can also catch taxis without the use of any app. There is a popular taxi company called 'Blue Bird Group' that has been in taxi operations for a very long time, and you may use their service without hesitation. Their service is reliable, and the drivers are friendly too. As mentioned earlier, motorbike taxis are operating in Surabaya. Make sure you wear a helmet every time you use this service.

Taking cars on rent

In Surabaya, the traffic conditions can sometimes be tiresome! So, if you wish to rent a car and drive it by yourself, you will have to be extra careful and attentive. If you are not comfortable with the road conditions and the routes here, the best thing is to rent a car with a driver. You can enjoy the tour as you wish.

Try out a traditional mode too

When in Surabaya, do not miss out on a Becak ride. Becak is a cycle rickshaw (you must probably have seen it in old movies) as they were so popular back in the day. These cycle rickshaws are of course not so fast, but guarantee a unique, traditional experience which you can enjoy peacefully.

Walking and cycling

If you plan to explore the heart of the city, the best way to roam around is on foot. There are sidewalks, but they largely vary in size and quality. So, be mindful when you keep steps. For those who prefer cycling, use the dedicated cycling lanes in the city. Even if you don't own a bike, use the rental services and get one. This is what many of the foreign travellers do.

Trains?

The only issue with the Surabaya commuter train system is that it doesn't cover certain routes. However, the train routes cover the suburbs.

Google Maps

Needless to say, you can Google Maps when you are in Surabaya too. Before taking the bus or the taxi, use Google Maps to estimate the time of the travel and it's also better if you can have the map opened during your journey too. Sometimes Google Maps can also mislead you (and you know that!). So, make sure you know some Indonesian phrases, so that you can initiate a talk with any local anytime.
