How to enjoy your first time visit to Maldives
Travel in Maldives
The Maldives is a high end, luxurious travel destination, its main source of foreign revenue is through the tourism sector. The industry is very efficient and one of the most favoured vacation spots since recent times. However, prices are steep but the level of indulgence and service is excellent. Here are a few tips to help you get started on planning your first vacation to the Maldives so you can enjoy with peace of mind.
1. It's important to take the weather into account to have the best possible time in the Maldives. November up to April is the peak season due to the agreeable weather conditions prevailing on the islands. You can enjoy endless sunshine with little to no bad weather. However, keep in mind peak season means accommodation and other activities will cost a lot of money. If you don't have the means that doesn't mean you can never visit either. Instead aim for the off-peak seasons and the in-between shoulder period, between April and September. The weather will still be pleasant plus there is a 20% reduced rates for accommodation in many resorts. Look up resorts such as Saii Lagoon Maldives. Some are sure to offer discounts, perhaps for other Maldives activities such as water sports as well. However, be prepared for sporadic rains during the day. Travelling during Ramadan period is also not recommended, as the hotel staff will be on leave.
2. Book your hotels and flights online. Finding the perfect accommodation can be quite overwhelming as there is a wide array of resorts to choose, so do your research well in advance. It is also significant to figure out how you want to spend your time, so take into account your interests and book accordingly. This will be especially important if you're travelling during shoulder and off-peak seasons. Always compare hotel prices with online booking sites and pick what suits you the best. The same can be said for airline bookings, research well in advance and don't be in a hurry! Furthermore, travel insurance is a must, even if all you do is relax in a resort.
3. Unless you're comfortable with using your roaming services it is worthwhile to buy a sim card when you arrive at the airport. The sim will come in handy if the Wi-Fi on the island resort is not as up to speed, or in an urgent situation. Some islands can be remote and isolated so go prepared.
4. Be mindful of what you pack as certain items are not allowed through the Maldivian customs. These include un-Islamic religious material, alcohol, cigarettes and tobacco products without an advisory and pork products. Apart from the don'ts, there are many things you should bring, such as a water-resistant camera or an underwater camera. If you are going to try any water activities take appropriate gear and swimwear. Take with you tropical climate-friendly clothes, such as cotton t-shirts, shorts, and extra swimwear. In the private islands, the guests are free to wear what they like, if you are staying in Male or inhabited islands, you will have to abide by some rules. Women are not allowed to wear swimsuits and have to dress modestly covering arms and legs. Don't forget a waterproof sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and a medical kit for emergencies.
5. Take the opportunity to spend at least one night at a water bungalow. But of course, will be more expensive but surely well worth the returns. Places you must visit include the bioluminescent beach in the Baa Atoll; the planktons release luminous toxins that light up under the night sky. It is reminiscent of a star-lit sky beneath the ocean bed, a magical experience for sure.
