Phuket is the largest island in Thailand and is well-known for its beautiful beaches and nightlife. While most tourists head to its sunny shores, Phuket has many hidden gems that shouldn't be missed. With its beautiful scenery and waterfalls tucked away in lush forests, there is plenty to explore off the beaten track. Travelling to these natural wonders will provide a break from the busy tourist spots. Let’s dive into some of the best natural attractions in Phuket:

Bang Pae Waterfall

Bang Pae Waterfall is the largest waterfall and one of the best places to visit in Phuket. Found in Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, it’s a popular spot with visitors and locals who come to take a dip in the refreshing waters. The natural pool at the base of the waterfall is a great spot to cool off in the heat. To reach the waterfall, you’ll have to take a short hike through the forest and follow a pathway. Afterwards, you could explore the surrounding jungle, which has many large, shady trees. Also keep an eye out for wildlife, such as birds and butterflies.

The waterfall is at its most powerful during the rainy season from May to October. However, it remains a popular location with visitors throughout the year.

Tonsai Waterfall

Another waterfall you can view in the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park is Tonsai Waterfall - which is more secluded but just as scenic. Though this waterfall is smaller, it’s a top spot for nature lovers and photographers due to its beautiful surroundings. With its rich biodiversity and flora and fauna, you can also do some birdwatching here. Follow the trails that lead deeper into the park, to admire the beautiful rainforest ecosystem of Phuket. Since you’ll have to do some walking, wear sturdy shoes since the trails can be slippery after the rains.

Kathu Waterfall

Kathu Waterfall is located in the Kathu district and is a stunning waterfall with many tiers. It is made up of small cascades rather than a single flow of water. Reaching the top of Kathu Waterfall can be a challenge, as there are several sets of steps to climb. The view from the top is highly worth it, however. On the way, you’ll come across a series of natural pools, where you can stop to take a dip and refresh yourself. The waterfall is at its most impressive during the rainy season as the cascades can be admired in all their glory.

The surroundings are peaceful, with lush jungle – but it’s also a nice location for a day out with family. There are spots where you can have a picnic, and the pools are safe for swimming even for kids, since the water is shallow. After a tiring day spent outdoors, travellers can relax in luxury at hotels such as Avani+ Mai Khao Phuket suites & villas.

Scenic viewpoints

Aside from the waterfalls, Phuket also has many breathtaking viewpoints that offer a look at the island’s landscape. They are ideal for travellers who don’t want to go on lengthy hikes and for those travelling with family. One of these is Promthep Cape, located at the southern tip of the island and one of the most popular viewpoints in Phuket. Visitors can admire beautiful views of the Andaman Sea, and it’s an especially lovely area to visit at sunset.

Karon Viewpoint or Three Beaches Hill provides a panoramic view of three of Phuket’s most beautiful beaches – Kata Noi, Kata, and Karon. Visitors will be able to capture some truly great shots of the coastline from here.

Big Buddha Viewpoint can be reached by climbing to the top of Nakkerd Hill. It is home to the Big Buddha statue, one of the most iconic landmarks in Phuket. You can enjoy 360-degree views of Phuket Town from its base, along with Chalong Bay, and the surrounding areas.
