A train going from Hoi an to Phong nha

With its beautiful landscapes, cool historic towns, and quiet countryside, Vietnam is charming, and the trip from Hoi An to Phong Nha is totally part of it. Be it some adventure away from beaten paths or just an amateur of nature, willing to see UNESCO World Heritage sites, this journey is all about great views, cool history, and seeing some of the most stunning caves in the world.

1. Overview of Hoi An to Phong Nha

Hoi An is the cute old town, with its rather well-preserved buildings and beautiful street lamps, while Phong Nha is totally famous for the amazing caves with a rather beautiful national park. Considering seeing either or both, these are roughly 320 kilometers apart, which can take around 6 to 10 hours to make, depending on how one arrives.

2. Cool ways from Hoi An to Phong Nha

a. By Bus

Far and away the cheapest option will be to take the bus from Hoi An to Phong Nha. A number of different companies offer sleeping buses overnight, in which one can catch a few winks en route. The journey usually takes 9 or 10 hours and will cost in the region of $15 to $25 USD.

It is cheap, efficient, and an overnight service.

Disadvantages: the buses are often crowded, and the roads, particularly in the countryside, can be bumpy.

b. By Rail

While there isn't any direct train from Hoi An to Phong Nha, one can go by train from Da Nang, which is 30 km away from Hoi An, to Dong Hoi, which is the nearest station from Phong Nha. From here, take a bus or a taxi for another one hour to get to Phong Nha.

Pros: Comfortable travel and a nice view on the way, compared to bus trips.

Cons: It is by train plus a subsequent bus/taxi transfer. It's not so comfortable, and the trip might take up to 10 hours anyhow.

c. Private Car or Taxi

If you like flexibility and don't mind paying more for comfort, book a private car or taxi in advance. It's roughly a 6-7-hour drive, but of course, you can always stop en-route at great views or simply cool places, such as Hai Van Pass or the Demilitarized Zone.

Pros: Flexible, fast, and comfortable. You are allowed to make a tailor-made trip.

Cons: This is the most expensive option, costing around 100 to 150 USD dollars.

d. By Bicycle or Motorbike

If you're into adventure, cruising on a motorbike from Hoi An to Phong Nha is a super fun choice. You'll get to ride through some gorgeous roads, including bits of the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Pros: Adventure, free-spirited travel that takes you wherever you want.

Cons: This is a long drive, and the road conditions differ. Make sure you're experienced in handling long-distance motorbike trips in Vietnam.

3. Highlights of the route

There are a number of great stops en-route from Hoi An to Phong Nha:

Hai Van Pass: Incredibly beautiful mountain pass with killer views of the coastline. Whether one is driving or cruisin' on a motorbike, one would definitely want to stop and soak in the scenery.

Hue: Super famous for its imperial citadel and royal tombs, and it really is a cultural gem. This is a perfect place for a stop to see some of Vietnam's royal history.

DMZ-Demilitarized Zone: If one enjoys anything to do with history, then the DMZ separating North and South Vietnam will more than offer a peek into the country's cool wartime past.

Dong Hoi: Well, it is the closest big town to Phong Nha. That is quite a cool coastal city to unwind and catch the beach vibe before you jump into caves.

4. Getting to Phong Nha: What You Should Know

But then it is quite a sight once you finally get to Phong Nha. Furthermore, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has some pretty stunning cave systems: Phong Nha Cave, Paradise Cave, huge Son Doong Cave—the world's largest—and many others. Plenty of other outdoor activities can be done, too: trekking, boat cruises, ziplining.

The countryside feel of Phong Nha is just chill; it is a perfect place to hang around. You'll find plenty of homestays and eco-lodges, to take in the nature and support locals.

5. Tips to travel relaxed

Book ahead: If you ever were thinking of taking a bus or a train, it pays to get your tickets well in advance, at least if it's ultra-touristy.

Snacks and water: The trip from Hoi An to Phong Nha is long and bereft of many amenities, particularly if one travels by bus.

Check the weather: Sometimes, Central Vietnam has heavy rainfall during the year, and this would affect the way the roads are, especially if you happen to be on motorbikes.

Overnight stops: On the way, one can also stop in Hue or Dong Hoi for an overnight stay, in case he wants to explore a bit more of the Vietnamese history and culture.
