As a top tourist destination, Japan is famous for its culture and heritage. In the summer, its cities and beach towns are buzzing with festivities. Although Japan might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of a beach vacation, the nation's islands are home to some of Asia's most beautiful and unspoiled beaches. Here are some incredible beaches waiting to be explored this summer, along with top festivals held during the sunny season.

Shikoku

Shikoku is Japan's smallest major island, renowned for its beautiful beaches. Its untouched shoreline has secluded coves, which are ideal for a peaceful retreat. Shodoshima Island is a hidden gem that is well-known for its olive groves. With the bonus of clear waters and peaceful surroundings, this is a great spot if you want to swim and soak up the sun.

Another great destination is Kagawa Prefecture, home to Yashima Beach. This shorefront is ideal if you’re travelling with your family, as it has shallow waters that are safe for swimming. The scenery is another attraction that draws in tourists. It is also popular for its festivals, allowing visitors to experience the best of Japanese beach culture.

Hokkaido

Hokkaido is the northernmost island of Japan. Although it’s not a well-known summer destination, it boasts some great beaches that are worth a visit. Shikotsu-Toya National Park is one such location, known for its scenic lakes and secluded shores. The clear waters are ideal if you want to take a dip, and kayaking is also offered here, taking visitors past thick forests and mountains.

Be sure to visit the beaches of Otaru while you’re in the area. This charming seaside town is famous for its beautiful ocean views. Other fun things to do in Otaru include exploring the lanes with their quaint shops and cafes and sampling the region’s delicious seafood! Visitors can also find accommodation at top hotels nearby, like Grand Park Otaru by Park Hotel Group.

Okinawa

If you want to spend some time in a tropical beach paradise, head to Okinawa to enjoy the sun-kissed weather and blue sea. Even though popular spots like Kadena Beach receive large crowds, there are more peaceful alternatives nearby, renowned for their natural beauty.

Another great spot is Yagaji Island, which is linked to the central island by a bridge. This serene location is perfect if you want to go snorkelling to see colourful fish and sea creatures. The climate is warm, and you can also join in the indigenous festivals that celebrate the rich culture of the island.

Experience Japan’s Vibrant Summer Festivals

Japan's summer activities are not all about the beach—it's also a great time for festivals. These vibrant and colourful matsuri (festivals) bring together history, and tradition, uniting the whole community. Travellers can watch the spectacular fireworks and parades, and taste delicious street food.

Sapporo Summer Festival (Hokkaido): Hokkaido's capital city, Sapporo, is best known for its snow festival. However, the Sapporo Summer Festival, held in Odori Park, is just as fascinating. It has everything from beer gardens to food stalls and traditional events, making it the ideal setting to enjoy a warm summer evening.

Bon Odori: Another exciting summer festival is the Bon Odori. This is a traditional dance festival celebrated all across Japan, especially along the coasts. The festival features lively dance performances that are held on the beach. The dancers wear colourful yukatas and move in a circle, and even passers-by are allowed to participate.

Different coastal towns have their own Bon Odori festivals, complete with food stands offering local cuisine, fireworks, and cultural shows. It's a great way to learn more about Japanese culture.

Nebuta Matsuri (Aomori): Held in late July or early August, Nebuta Matsuri is one of Japan's biggest summer festivals. Large wooden floats, representing mythical warriors and beasts, are lit up and paraded along the streets. They are preceded by lively drummers and dancers through Aomori City and finally come to a halt on the shoreline.
