After being locked down and homebodies over the past two years and now with travel opening up, people around the world are looking for new experiences.
Eating out at a fancy restaurant is a real treat for us regular folk. Imagine these restaurants were within your grasp. Which would you choose?
Cape Town, South Africa
The last time I had dined up a tree was when I was a kid eating a sandwich and waiting for my friends to walk past below me so I could surprise them by showering them with water from my water bottle. Oh yes, life was a lot simpler years ago. What we called entertainment was entirely different today.
Treehouse dining, in Stellenbosch wine country. Moyo Restaurant is well known in South Africa for exquisite dining and being African. The cuisine consists of various succulent meats, salads, and other traditional African food.
If you have ever wanted to eat a glorious meal in a tree house, then this is the place to go. There are other treehouse restaurants in Phuket and across the globe, but this is one that I have been to, and I really enjoyed the experience.
San Antonio, Texas
Dick’s Last Resort is a restaurant that plays on the crude and rude, and they serve your meals with a ‘side of sarcasm.’ Servers serve up sarcasm with your order, and there was a time when you could request extra abuse. Not sure if that still exists as an option? This is not a place for the easily offended. Also, if you are wearing a necktie, the staff will cut it off and stick it on their board, displaying neckties of the uninformed who dared enter the restaurant with a necktie.
It was a fun evening but a little crude at times. The food was good, but then again, when I visited there, I was a twenty-something-year-old student. It is something to experience. Avoid it at all costs if you are easily offended. You need to thicken your skin to dine here. Or, as they say, ‘drink a cup of concrete and harden up.’
Maldives
A beautiful part of the world, the Maldives is a group of islands in the Indian Ocean, southwest of India. It is home to a particular dining experience.
The Hurawhali Restaurant is the largest undersea restaurant. Anyone interested in sitting and eating in a crystal clear ocean surrounded by marine life, this is the one for you, calling all marine biologists, deep seas divers, or anyone who loves marine life.
They attached the restaurant to the hotel building, and it looks amazing. This one is on my bucket list.
Fortezza Medicea Restaurant, Volterra , Italy
They set this one in prison, a castle prison. You get to enjoy a delicious meal inside a maximum-security prison. They targeted this one to crime enthusiasts, I would think. This outing brings together the prison experience with all the features of an extremely ancient castle.
You will eat with the original historical dining utensils. The actual inmates who are serving life sentences do the cooking and food preparation. Not sure this one would be one I would like to visit.
Marketed as affordable and delicious cuisine, for those who want an affordable experience, this could be one for you.
Dinner in the Sky Restaurant
This one is for you for those who are adrenalin junkies or just love the feeling of being suspended from a crane while dining. The idea has traveled from Hong Kong to Las Vegas and seats about 30 guests. There is a full staff of waiters and chefs, and none of them are suspended, and yet all of them are suspended. Did you see what I did there? Two senses of using the word suspended. Okay, okay, silly humor, I know. Seriously though, I’m not loving heights, so I’ll give this one a miss. Also, where are the toilets? I didn’t see any suspended from the platform? It could be a rather messy affair in the air..
Twin Stars Diner, Moscow
This is located in Moscow. The theme is twins; everything here is in pairs, whether the food or the servers look identical.
For twins, they offer a two-for-one meal; for triplets, the deal is three for one. Not a bad deal.
The owner came up with the idea after watching a movie that presented alternative realities to the protagonist, a sort of ‘mirroring of reality, and the twin theme was born.
Seeing double can be a consequence of the patronage and not the vodka, or then again, maybe not…
The Kemi Snow Restaurant in Norway
You can have the pleasure of freezing your butt off while entering the Snow and ice castle to eat in a snow castle, the stuff of fairy tales, let it go, let it go…
Depending on the year you go, your experience of it will differ because the entire castle is snow and ice. After winter, they take down and rebuild the castle. A new architect applies his or her skills every year, so the design is continually changing.
Robot Restaurant.
Location: Tokyo, Japan. This technologically advanced ‘restaurant’ stands in contrast to others that appreciate natural surroundings. This is loud and neon and, by the looks of it, an assault on the senses, all senses all at once. They serve sushi portions to the diners, but this is, strictly speaking, not a restaurant. They made the attraction of color and sound even more fantastic through the colorful and exotic costumes worn by the staff.
Let me know if you find any of these intriguing. There is a bit of everything for varying tastes and exciting ways to experience a night out.
