Butterfly Bridge

A pedestrian or footbridge lets people cross from one side of the river to the other without the danger of encountering any traffic. Both walker and cyclists make use of them safely. There are quite a few amazing pedestrian bridges in the world.

Europe

Denmark

Butterfly Bridge

This bridge in Copenhagen, Denmark has three segments that connect the banks of the Christianshavns Canal. Two of the steel spans can be raised independent of one another forming the shape of a butterfly.

Cirkelbroen/Circle Bridge

Also in Copenhagen this bridge was inspired by the form of a series of ships moored next to each other. It spans the Christianshavns Canal. There are five circular platforms each with a mast joined to created the 129-foot-long pedestrian and cyclist bridge. The bridge spans the southern mouth of the canal connecting Applebys Plads to the south with Christianboro to the north.

England

Gateshead Millennium Bridge

The bridge spans the River Tyne and is a curved bridge used by both pedestrians and cyclists. It connects Gateshead Quays and the north bank of Newcastle stretching 126 meters across the river. The bridge tilts like a blinking eye to let ships pass beneath it.

Scale Line Bridge

Provides a means of getting across the River Hull. This is an apostrophe-shaped swing bridge in Hull, England. This bridge links Scale Lane with Tower Street creating a pedestrian route between the museums in the historic Old Town and the Deep Submarium. Pedestrians are able to ride on the swing bridge as it opens to river traffic.

Merchant Square Footbridge

This bridge stretches acorss the Grand Union Canal in London, England. The deck is formed with five steele beams that are raised in a motion resembling the unfolding of a Japanese fan. It is located in Paddington.

Millennium Bridge

This bridge spans the Thames River in London, England, It connects St. Paul's Cathedral with the Tate Modern Museum and the Globe Theater. This a steele suspension bridge between Southwark Bridge and Blackfriars Railway Bridge.

France

The Jetty to Mont-Saint-Michel

This is a bridge created as a passage to the medieval French city of Mont-Saint-Michel. It is located off the coast of Normandy and links the mainland to the UNESCO World Heritage site. Mont-Saint-Michel is an tidal island and mainland commune in Normandy, France.

La Roche-sur-Yon Pedestrian Bridge

This bridge is located in La Roche-sur-Yon, France. It spans over the tracks of the TGV Railway connecting new neighborhoods with the historic city and has replaced the standard railway bridge. This is a tubular bridge with a triangulated mesh exterior.

The Netherlands

Luchtsingel

This bridge connects the north and center districts of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. It is a quarter-mile-long pedestrian bridge and the wooden structure is lined with planks bearing the names of the sponsors. The name of the bridge translates to "air Tunnel". The brightly yellow wooden bridge runs through a building and across roads and railways to connect three previously unconnected areas of the city.

Melkwegbridge

This bridge is located in Purmerend, the Netherlands. It separates pedestrian and cyclists on two levels. An archway of steps curves above the lower dech and splits to let boats pass beneath on the Noordhollandish Canal. The bridge connects the historic city center with the new Weidevenne District.

The Paleisbrug

The bridge is located in Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. It connects the historic city center and the newly developed area of Paleiskwartier. It is a raised park, pedestrian, and cycle bridge. It is like an elevated park with plants, trees, benches, and lighting even at night. The plants are selected based on their different flowering periods.

Portugal

Pont Segunda Circular

This footbridge stretches across the Second Circular Road in Lisbon, Portugal. The bridge stands out with its orange color accomodation both pedestrians and cyclists.

Pedro e Inês Footbridge

This footbridge is located in Coimbra, Portugal. It has a lightning bold shape making in appear to stop in midair. It features a balustrade of colorful glass. The name of the bridge and inspiration for the design comes from a pair of star-crossed Portuguese lovers in the 14th century. The bridge spans the Rio Mondego.

Australia

Melbourne

Webb Bridge

This bridge is located in Melbourne, Australia in the Dockland precinct connecting it with the Southbank. Providing a way to cross the Yara River for both pedestrians and cyclists. This modern pedestrian bridge was modeled after an Aboriginal fish trap. The bridge is lit up at night.

Nelson Street Cycleway

This bridge is located in Auckland, New Zealand. It was created using 2,000 feet of a former highway. The bridge is pink with 300 programmable LED light boxes that are shared between pedestrians and cyclists. The most well-known pathway Te Ara I Whiti/Lightway the bridge continues to the Nelson Street arterial road and into the City Center.

North America

Canada

Calgary, Alberta

Peace Bridge

The Peace Bridge stretches over the Bow River in Calgary and connects a residential community with the downtown area. There are pedestrian and cycling paths. The bridge is red and white symbolizing the Canadian flag.

The United States

Illinois

BP Pedestrian Bridge

This bridge is located in Chicago, Illinois. It connects Maggie Daley Park with Millennium Park. It is a girder footbridge in the Loop community spanning Columbus Drive to connect with Maggie Daley Park.
